Microsoft confirms no voice-chat between Xbox One and 360

4.6
A bit more info has now bubbled forth, this time about communicating with friends on other consoles. Chief Xbox One platform architect, Marc Whitten, told IGN – as part of an ongoing ‘Ask Microsoft Anything’ panel – that, even though friends will be able to see each other’s presence on Xbox Live, voice chat won’t be supported between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles:

Is there cross-console Party Chat? i.e. since it’s all ‘Xbox Live’, can people on Xbox 360s Party Chat with their friends on Xbox One?

For a variety of technical reasons, including the sound quality that I talk about below – we don’t support voice chat between the two systems. You will still be able to send and receive text messages to friends on both systems, however.”

The “sound quality” aspect that Whitten mentions refers to the improvements that Microsoft has made in improving audio chat on the Xbox One. Whereas the Xbox 360 headset worked with 16kHz downstream / 8kHz upstream at 14-bit compressed, the Xbox One’s headset (which will be included in the box with the console) streams 24kHz audio at 16-bit resolution uncompressed, both upstream and downstream.

Incidentally, as TechRadar mentions, Sony won't have any problems with cross-console chat between the PlayStation 4 and its PS3 predecessor. According to the big cheese at Sony UK, Fergal Gara, when asked about chat between the two consoles, he simply replied: "It's there."

"Hey guys Microsoft just announced that there's no voice chat between Xbox One and Xbox 360, lets announce that there's voice chat between PS3 and PS4!"

It's funny, because Sony announced that there will be cross-game chat between the PS3/PS4 in June, while Microsoft announced that there won't be cross-console chat between the Xbox 360/XOne just recently.

Try harder, fanboy.

The PS3 doesn't have party chat and the PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility. So just how are they going to do that?.

That's not really a bad thing if you can afford it.

Well if you can't im sure if your friends was a good friend he would get on the 360 to talk to you or skype, phone, etc :D

Welp, any dreams I had of even having a cross voice change with PC - Xbox One because of Skype just got thrown out the window.

DavidDo0M While I am disappointed that chat between Xbox 360 and Xbox One won't be possible, the reason given makes perfect sense from a technological standpoint. Furthermore, It won't really matter considering that I do still also own an Xbox 360 should I desire to chat with 360 gamers.

The Sony fanboy that wrote this story obviously didn't take into consideration that the PS3 does NOT even have Party Chat. So, NO, it won't be capable of cross platform Party Chat.

Finally, I do not understand Sony fanboys. I personally believe that both the Xbox One and the PS4 will be good, quality gaming systems. From a gaming standpoint, they are essentially the same system. It is merely a matter of preference. To each their own. I very rarely see an Xbox gamer on here trash talking PS. However, every single day I see tons of PS gamers constantly trash talking the Xbox. Why? What are you trying to prove? Grow up.

You never see ms fanboys? Stop, just stop... You see what you want to see, selective vision at its finest.

I see constant fanboys of both systems all the time. The only thing worse are the people who pretend to be impartial then completely contradict themselves later on...
Regarding the fanboys I agree.

OT: Shame but like he said, it's technically not possible...

Woobie That is pretty dumb imo, I would've liked that feature.

bigchukka This really annoys me!

It wouldn't be to hard for them to put a skype app on the Xbox 360, i have friends who won't be able to afford the console straight away.

If you think about it they would make more sales if friends bought the Xbox one because they wouldn't be able to talk with each other.

I might have to set-up my 360 in elsewhere in my room just to talk to my friends on it. Wish they could just add the Skype app
