Microsoft 'improves' Xbox One GPU clock speed

4.5
Marc Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox and chief product officer for Xbox One, says Microsoft has increased the clock speed on the console's GPU by about 6.6 per cent.

Speaking on the latest Major Nelson podcast, Whitten outlined a number of changes to the system as it "gets close to the final performance envelope".

"This is the thing I think people are going to see as we get into Gamescom and people get their first look at new things since E3," he said. "This is the time where developers have the final dev kits in their hands, they're really working closely with us on how things have come together. There's some things that have really started to come together quite well."

A mixture of optimisation software and initial conservative estimates has meant the GPU can reach 853mhz - effectively allowing developers to put more demand on the system.

"Since E3, an example is we've dropped in what we internally call our mono driver. It's our graphics driver that really is 100 per cent optimised for the Xbox One hardware," Whitten said.

"You start with the base Direct-X driver, and then you take out all parts that don't look like Xbox One and you add in everything that really, really optimises that experience. Almost all of our content partners have picked it up now and I think it's made a really nice improvement."

He continued: "That's the time where you start tweaking the knobs. Either your theory was right dead on, or you were a little too conservative, or you were a little too aggressive. It's actually been really good news for us, an example of that is we've tweaked up the clock speed on our GPU from 800mhz to 853mhz."

Xbox One will be available in 21 markets this November. The Xbox One price has been set at £425 / €499 / $499.

Wink still rather have a pc.

Yeah, same. I love PC gaming so much, I think it is much better than console gaming.

Ampz That's not exactly the biggest improvement.

At least they are improving. It's better than nothing.

How hard is it to understand this. It won't make the console any **** better. 53mhz isn't a real improvement at all. If anything it'll make it more unstable. Why up the GPU clock speed if they have the all mighty Cloud they keep on boasting?

Do you even know what they said about the Cloud or you just a blind hater? they said its for things such as AI moron to take the load off the xbox, the xbox isn't run by the cloud :faceplam:

You are far too paranoid.

Funny thing is, it's the damn truth.

NSA tracks cell phones too... we should get rid of them too right?

Hmm. They could go somewhere insane with this.

Imagine if a while after release people find you can overclock the clock speed on your console, even slightly, it will be quite a nerd attraction.

I know I'd buy a console you can OC.

-Examples At least they are improving the console and taking into consideration the things we say! Think, they are letting us share games, you don't have to sign in every 24 hours, and they have done a lot more.

But they got rid of Family Sharing.

It is not true because you can change the settings so that feature does not work or just unplug your console.

They claim it turns off. If it does, then why have it plugged in?

I'm sure that your xbox will not explode if you do not have your kinect plugged in while it is off, everything will be fine.

Woobie Improvement is good and on the Xbox One.. I'll take it.

Yeah but it's so small for a console that's getting made years later.
