Development on retail Xbox One units 'a wonderful idea', says Persson

4.6
Minecraft creator Markus Persson says the ability to use 'any Xbox One' for game development is 'a wonderful idea'.

Speaking with Edge, Persson commented, "I think it's a wonderful idea to have the actual box be the dev kits."

He went on, "This makes it easier for both the developer and for Microsoft, and presumably they could make it a lot cheaper since they'd only sell unlock codes.

"I realize there are other factors at play here, though, like a perceived need to make sure only 'legitimate' developers get access to it, so a monetary barrier might still be in place," noted Persson.

In yet another surprising revision of Xbox One policy, Microsoft announced Wednesday that it will not only allow indie developers to self-publish on Xbox One, but that every Xbox One console can be used for development (although not at launch).

Indie developers have expressed mixed reactions to the news, some optimistic of at least the opportunity to release their creations on the new platform, others cautious of Microsoft's willingness to offer indie titles sufficient exposure on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

FYI I don't really care about the price, I really want the day one console that has DAY ONE written on it

Its only on the controller. And written very small.

Yea its only the controller im sure you will be able to buy one on ebay that day lol. But i would wait a week or two to but that controller because they probley will go for 100-200

I'm not bothered about the day one edition. At least i get it, thats the main thing

Ranzee has a point. I'm getting the day one edition, but if I'm getting the
console either way, I don't care...

I also think it's a good idea. A lot of more games will be created and shared with this new addition.

He would be one to know about it but I wonder how long after launch developers will have to wait for them to gain access to the dev kits. I bet it is going to cost at least $500 to get access to the development keys to make it a dev kit.

xMatchTricksxFTW I'm kinda confused on this post, do they mean they can edit the xbox one from the console itself?

"that it will not only allow indie developers to self-publish on Xbox One, but that every Xbox One console can be used for development "

It's pretty much stating that the Xbox One console can be used as a development kit for games in itself.

And that you do not need a dev kit.

Pretty much, It will likely save developers a fair lot of money. It will be more beneficial for indie developers than big companies though

Yeah your right. It's such a good idea that they don't have to be spending $1k+ on a dev kit.

Yea lol who would want to pay that
