Kinect:Microsoft pledges to “aggressively challenge” government spying

4.5
Xbox One’s Kinect monitoring tech has had gamers and industry professionals tugging at their collars nervously since it was announced, but Microsoft has stated that it will aggressively challenge any government that uses the device to spy into our homes.

In a statement to The Verge, a Microsoft rep wrote, “Absent a new law, we don’t believe the government has the legal authority to compel us or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data.

“We’d aggressively challenge in court any attempts to try and force us to do so.”

The statement follows concerns of Microsoft’s date sharing with the NSA and other government bodies via the US Congress-baked PRISM surveillance initiative.

Microsoft recently explained the nature of its data-sharing, following claims that it has relinquished data from Skype calls, SkyDrive accounts and other services to comply with legal obligations placed on corporations as part of the PRISM strategy.

What do you make of the above? Do you trust Kinect’s monitoring tech? Let us know below.

RATF for once MS may be on our side

Well, I think they will still be giving the information to the government. They did with Skype, so I am sure they will do it with the kinect.

I don't think you can trust Microsoft with this statement. They openly gave the NSA information in the past. Why would I think differently about this? Just because the people found out about it? They could very well just be trying to cover themselves to keep their business in line. If they are telling the truth, the government will get the information one way or another I am sure. If laws are against it, I am sure laws will be edited or made in order to allow it. People that are concerned with the Kinect sensor and other Microsoft related products have every right to be concerned. Everyone should be concerned, whether this affects you or not.

MD5 If they really want to "Aggressively Challenge" spying, let us unplug the kinect.

LOL. I don't see why it's a requirement.

Juton09 Seems like you guys are making it a big deal if they spy on us, are you guys criminals or what.. as far as I know, even if they did spy on us what are they going to listen from us? Are you guys hiding something or what? "I killed someone, they will never find out" I mean come on..

So, you'll have nothing to complain about the next time you discuss that embarrassing problem or infection or medical condition to your mom and then a few months later you get ads on the dashboard or through the mail about the embarrassing condition.

They say that they'll protect your privacy, but they have patents for this sort of thing, this will happen at some point in the future, it isn't tinfoil hat stuff.

Better safe than sorry....

Just disconnect it, MS should know better than to be an attractive magnet for any spies, wherever they work for the government or some marketing company that also happens to be a Microsoft Official Partner.

I really hope their serious about this.
