PS4 eliminates lengthy pre-install process, says Sony dev

4.5
The PS4 will do away with he the lengthy pre-installation processes that plagued PS3 gaming over the past seven years, claims a senior Sony engineer.

Many PS3 games (and a growing number of Xbox 360 games) require users to pre-install several gigabytes of data before being able to play - a process which can take up to and beyond 20 minutes.

According to the Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Sony's Neil Brown told Develop attendees today that the same technology which allows PS4 to play a game as it's downloading from the internet will also allow the PS4 to play a game while it's being installed from a disc.

"A similar system also works on Blu-ray, chunks are automatically copied to the hard drive in the background," said Brown. "This means that after the first few minutes your game can rely on having faster read speeds from the hard drive."

Brown said that this "provides a better experience for players" because it will be "a completely background process".

He added, "They don't have to wait for anything to install before playing the game. The game will launch as soon as the disc has been put in the drive."

The PS4 release is currently officially 'holiday 2013'.

Get some better internet.

It's not Internet, have you ever gotten a BF3 update? They're insanely large.

Yes, it is internet. Faster internet, faster download speeds. And not taking an hour to download a single update.

I have 50/25 and it still took a decent amount of time to download it. Not 12 hours, but a good amount of time.

DNaDee How many people have good enough internet to actually get use of this? How much of the game has to be installed for me to start playing?

They are talking about from a disk so you wouldn't need internet at all, thats why they say "He added, "They don't have to wait for anything to install before playing the game. The game will launch as soon as the disc has been put in the drive."

I'm talking about digital downloads, this news already applies to the 360 beta (and was already announced for the XBone) so I'm not really impressed.

My internet is pretty slow, but it also had to download all the DLC packs.

Same for me.. The BF3 updates were pathetic.. I mean at one stage i had a 3gb update and half of the stuff didnt even affect me.. the others i could barely tell the difference
