Xbox One sticking at $499, Kinect still 'core part' of experience

4.8
Joystiq had a chance to speak with Xbox Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten this evening, following the company's DRM policy changes on Xbox One, and figured if we're already talking about changes, how about that $499 price?

"We really believe deeply in the value that we're delivering. Not just for the first day of launch, which we think is going to be amazing, with amazing games and entertainment experiences, but what this architecture can deliver over the long term." said Whitten. "We feel good about our price."

What about changing the price by removing the Kinect?

"We still absolutely believe in Kinect. It's a core part of the architecture. Frankly, it's really critical that you build it as something that's always there, always part of the platform. So that game creators, experience creators can know they can rely on it. And you, the user, that there's always a consistent experience. That it's not just an accessory."

Consumers aren't the only ones happy with today's changes. Both GameStop and rental service GameFly have applauded Microsoft for today's Xbox One policy shift.

Metro_2033 So we're paying an extra $100-$150 for a piece of **** motion camera that only fat people want? seems legit. and they've changed their shitty drm policies now so that should've knocked the price down some more, **** Microsoft can suck my balls if they think I'm paying that sum of money for a two bit, cheap built, only slightly better graphics than the 360 shitty ass console.

no.

661King I would gladly pay $499 for the X1 and Kinect, IF it was possible to completely unplug it from the system.

I don't find it being there a bad thing or I don't understand why people care so much that it's there.

The main concern is privacy. Having a camera on at all times looking at you is something that makes people uncomfortable. Contrary to popular belief on TTG, Microsoft is not a reliable corporation that should intrude on that much privacy. It has already been discovered that MS intercepts skype messages and calls. It has also been revealed that MS has been giving the U.S. Gov. information about its customers without a warrant. Whats to stop MS from giving the Gov. video/audio from kinects, under a "search warrant"?

so im assuming you don't own any device that has a built in camera or microphone then ?

Yeah, pretty much. The only camera I own is the one on my phone, which isn't always connected to the internet.

Your a clown then. The simple fact that you can disconnect it when your not playing games and could cover the camera/mic invalidates any issue

How am I a clown? Is it because I'm informed? The simple fact that you're still trying to defend this with such a moronic and uniformed argument makes me think your 12. You honestly think its OK for MS to spy on you while you play your games? That type of mentality is what is wrong with this generation. You buy something that you mistrust so much you cover it? Buying it for $100 extra just to "cover it up". There is a reason why its mandatory even though its possible to navigate the dash/features using the remote.

Tell me, how would you cover up the Kinect so it cant hear or see you?

The fact that you think i would do that is just jokes, i was explaining the fact that this is not some sort of plan by microsoft/NSA to "spy" on everyone, its just an obvious development of the system as a whole and you can simply turn it off completely when you're not using the system. I fail to see how this is some sort of privacy invasion when there's already thousands of kinect users already. Informed? you sound like a illuminati child. I have zero problems with paying for this console at the current price and i feel that the price is justified by what you are receiving in return. As for kinect i can only see positives from the integration of every console.

Its a fact that MS already gives skype calls/messages to the gov. Whats to stop MS from giving them "sample recordings" or something of that nature. You say there are already thousands of kinect users. Do you know whats the difference? Those kinects are removable. If MS can completely redo their DRM features, Im pretty sure they can make Kinect removable. Funny how you bring the Illuminati up. German officials want to ban the X1 because of privacy concerns, are they Illuminati children (which makes no sense, but you called me an "illuminati child")?

"Under the heading, game device 'Microsoft pushes a monitoring device in the market. The Xbox continuously records all sorts of personal information about me. Reaction rates, my learning or emotional states. The are then processed on an external server, and possibly even passed on to third parties. Whether they will ever deleted, the person can not influence". - Germany's federal commissioner for data protection.

Julianoz1224 Now you are acting as if they definitely will spy on us. The kinect can be completely turned off whenever you want, calm down.

If it can be completely turned of, why cant it be removed? Also, are you really just going to take their word for it? MS does a lot of shady things, I don't trust them with my privacy.

Firstly i don't understand why there isn't an edit option on the comment section gets annoying when that happens. The point im trying to make is that you genuinely believe this idea is to monitor users, it's just madness. If you have this much of a problem with privacy then i'm assuming you live in a remote forest location with a 3 mile radius to the nearest human and security similar to area 51 ? you can't honestly tell me that you don't use other products that could gather information on you ?

I agree there should be an edit button on here and there should also be an ability to hide comments like the "spoiler" button so It looks a lot nicer. The point Im trying to make is that I wouldnt put it past MS to record its users and give that info to the government. As I stated before, MS is affiliated with PRISM (a surveillance program). They gave the U.S. government personal information about its users. Even the German federal commissioner for data protection is saying it has the ability to spy on you. Nope, I don't have any products that collect info from me unknowingly. I choose what info I want to give out when on my PC or cellphone.

Oasis Kinect cares about your sad little life enough to spy on you. True story.

you would think this conversation is with a group of paranoid individuals who validate their choice of console by ridiculous issues.

Main reason why I'm not going with Xbox One, they can go spy on the other stupid people that don't give a sheet about privacy. You might as well put a camera in your shower and have it live streaming over the internet. Thank god Bill Gates cares about us and is running Monsanto's to give everyone cancer :D Don't forget to get your vaccinations that cause autism :D
