Xbox One loses 'family game sharing' following DRM policy revision

4.4
Microsoft's major Xbox One DRM policy revisions announced today come with one significant drawback - the loss of a previously-proposed 'family game sharing' feature.

One of Microsoft's more popular announcements for Xbox One's digital policy was the ability for a player to designate 10 'family' members' accounts, all of whom would then have full access to that players' games library.

This feature would have been governed by the console's tight control over game license ownership via strict DRM policies.

But with the relaxing of the console's DRM control, the firm has also withdrawn plans for the game sharing feature, among other benefits.

Microsoft's president of interactive entertainment business Don Mattrick explained in a statement, "The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold."

Marc Whitten, VP of Xbox Live clarified to Kotaku, "There's a few things we won't be able to deliver as a result of [the DRM policy changes].

"One of the things we were very excited about was 'wherever we go my games are always with me.' Now, of course your physical games won't show up that way. The games you bought digitally will. You'll have to bring your discs with you to have your games with you," he confirmed.

"Similarly, the sharing library [is something] we won't be able to deliver at launch," said Whitten.

Microsoft today officially ditched Xbox One's previously proposed and hugely controversial used game DRM policies and the need for the console to log in online once every 24 hours today, following widespread community outrage.

"As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One," said the firm today. Hit that link for full details.

shadow1 PS4 Still has kingdom hearts. That was like the only reason i wanted it and it still is.

Last time I checked, Xbox One still has Kingdom Hearts as well. Now again, it was last time I checked. I could now be wrong.

I thought it was always playstation exclusive, did microsoft also buy the rights to get it as well?

DRM is useless and pointless no need what so ever, basically ruins the whole console

Oasis So thanks to a bunch of uneducated no bodies we lose the family sharing option?

How about those that want to stay offline can and don't have access to whatever privileges and those that understand that being constantly connected isn't a big deal can as well, therefore reaping the benefits of the original DRM policy.

I really didn't see them giving in this easily, I just hope the collateral damage stops here.

mrkillspree All because people couldn't just be happy with what they were getting.
Shame on anyone who complained. We just lost a perfect new feature.

I'm deeply ashamed of the community that made this happen... With this, the industry has been set back years. I'm disappointed with the inflexible people that forced Microsoft's hand in ditching actual ideas and decent modifications that would have pushed digital gaming into the present.

It's awesome to see that more of you just get it and had a real grasp on the future vision.

Maybe next time eh? Oh well.

u forgot to list that playstation is easier to hack and has been shut down for a month thanks to hackers. Xbox has better security. kinect costs like $130, so with out kinect PS4 and XB1 would be near enough same price... think before u speak.

Oh the Irony. Seems like you should take your own advice before posting next time. XB1 is nothing but a jumped up Xbox 360 with a forced Kinect, and offers nothing new other than wanting to be a cable TV box. the NFL crap isn't welcome/going to work outside the US.

Yes it's more expensive because of the kinect but not only that, they are shutting out the Indie devs, and charge silly amounts for a game update. Sony have already announced that the PS4 will be self published and updates and support FREE, whereas Microsoft reportedly charge about $10,000 per update.

Microsoft dropped the ball on this one, and the damage is already done - this U-Turn is too little too late.

at the end of the day, its down to preference and opinion. u can go and blow Sony but and stickin with xbox. You can really say its sh*t anyways coz you havent actually (physically) used PS4 or XB1. So you really cant say its rubbish until you've used it.

Seems like someone needs to grow up. I own all consoles to date with the exception of a Wii-U, and I'm primarily a PC gamer - so making assumptions on the internet congratulations you are the first person in history to do so.

Fanboyism will get you nowhere. I don't need to play them to say console is rubbish as facts and policy's do not affect gameplay. Microsofts policy of shutting Indie Devs out, and charging extortionate prices for updates won't change the fact that the majority are moving over to the PS4 - Sony released statistics, and the amount of Indie Devs went from 112 odd in February to over 500 by the end of the E3.

If you wish to continue this losing battle, feel free to PM me.

So you are saying you actually played the ps4 and xbox one, really kid?

A shame a pretty cool feature will be taken out, but I say it's worth it to change the problems it had. Oh well. All is how it should have been from the beginning.
