PS3 users reporting 'bricked' systems after 4.45 firmware update

4.7
A new firmware update for the PS3 is live, but a significant number of reports indicate it's locking users out of their systems. Posters on the official PS3 Support forum noted they couldn't boot their systems after the update, and some users said restoring file systems didn't resolve the issue.

According to the PlayStation Twitter account, the 4.45 update includes trophy notification options and improves system stability - hmm.

We've reached out to Sony to clarify the situation. While the issues don't seem to be affecting all users, it might be wise to stay clear of the update for the time being.

Update: Sony Computer Entertainment sent out the following statement this morning:

"We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience."

NinjaWizard Sony has been having so much problems with the PS3 in the past 2 years. I feel bad for the PS3 users.

The only problems I know of that Sony has had is this and when they got hacked, that's all I have heard or at least remember.

Yea, but when they got hacked it was down for a while. Although they returned 2 free games to all PS3 users.

Well that's pretty fair I guess. At least that made up for the inconvenience.

Artro Playstation takes weeks to fix a problem they created when Microsoft takes all of about 2 days and they already have a fix.

Sony still fixes the mistakes never the less. Sure, Microsoft is faster but think of the difference between the two services

1. Play Station Network is Free while Microsoft is paid, offering premium service
2. Microsoft is larger in size than Sony Computer Entertainment

I agree, but i guess that's what you get when theirs free online :)

Well i am a ps3 user myself and the only problem i have had is when the network got hacked but they made up for it as i got about 6 free games from the store :)

I agree nothing can be perfect and Sony always fixes the problems in a timely manner and they reward people for having to deal with it.

Noted Sony screws everything up, this would never happen on xbox. At least not my microsoft

Actually this happens more then you think. It happened to mine and I had to reformat a Harddrive out of the blue.. A few years with that hard drive. I got no support what so ever.... So awesome Xbox support. Lets not forget the minecraft issue where every update screws up your save for some users... No word from ms or mojang but its kind of a big deal. So you can't say Xbox is worse when Sony is fixing it now. And in fact you can still have your saves if you launch it in safe mode.

Oh I am sorry they are not perfect but he is right PS3 has had way more problems with there stuff then xbox 360. That is why xbox 360 beats PS3 all day and everyday.

What about the billions of dollars Microsoft loss because of the RRoD problems? it seems like everyone forgets the problems Xbox has, like the millions of accounts being hack, or the RRoD problems, or the xbox destroying you disks for paid about $60 for. Xbox has been hacked before, so don't give me "that PS3 has been hacked, that's why Xbox is better" crap. :)

1. Sir the RROD was just from using the console for a long time and it got old.
2. This update was forced so they could have a brand new console and it just bricked cause of the update.
3. When xbox was hacked it wasnt down for months.
