PS3 users reporting 'bricked' systems after 4.45 firmware update

4.7
A new firmware update for the PS3 is live, but a significant number of reports indicate it's locking users out of their systems. Posters on the official PS3 Support forum noted they couldn't boot their systems after the update, and some users said restoring file systems didn't resolve the issue.

According to the PlayStation Twitter account, the 4.45 update includes trophy notification options and improves system stability - hmm.

We've reached out to Sony to clarify the situation. While the issues don't seem to be affecting all users, it might be wise to stay clear of the update for the time being.

Update: Sony Computer Entertainment sent out the following statement this morning:

"We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience."

Noted Sony screws everything up, this would never happen on xbox. At least not my microsoft

Actually this happens more then you think. It happened to mine and I had to reformat a Harddrive out of the blue.. A few years with that hard drive. I got no support what so ever.... So awesome Xbox support. Lets not forget the minecraft issue where every update screws up your save for some users... No word from ms or mojang but its kind of a big deal. So you can't say Xbox is worse when Sony is fixing it now. And in fact you can still have your saves if you launch it in safe mode.

If they sent you a new one, the Arcades have mostly Xexon and Zephyr motherboards which RROD easier. If they packaged one, I am guessing it was very dusted, then leaving it on for a longer period of time will cause a RROD. If it wasn't dusted. You could be mistaken what RROD is. There are several different error codes that come up with red rings. You got to pay attention.

Each time a console died, it came up with three red lights? I thought that was RROD? I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time lol.

As for the Core/Arcade side of things, I had the original minimal pack (console, control, memory card) which I think was the Core pack. If I remember rightly, this was the most vulnerable of the consoles (Core and Premium) When the RROD issue kicked off, MS released a new minimal console pack, called the Arcade pack. The "new" console in this bundle was supposed to be less susceptible to RROD (Wether it was or not, I don't honestly know). I think the Arcade had a HDMI port, whereas the Core console didn't. None of the replacement consoles MS sent me had HDMI ports.

Well considering out of the people I know that only two had to get a new xbox I don't believe any of that. They also had the original's. One for multiple years and one a little bit less than a year. I extremely doubt that you had that many problems. Also when my original broke they sent me an arcade. Which had been out for two months. Plus two hundred dollars since the original cost 400 and arcade only cost two hundred. So I got 200 dollars of store credit at Gamestop extra. If your original broke they would send you an upgrade which is my point. That's why I don't believe you.

I'm not asking you to believe me, though I genuinely wish I had the paperwork to back it up. I do not, ever, lie to prove a point. At worst, the individual times I posted could be out by maybe a month or two (bare in mind the final Core console died about 3 years ago), but the whole debacle I posted about did happen, and it put me off buying another Xbox 360 altogether. And for the record, the Elite was a christmas present from my brother in-law.

I'm glad you haven't had the same problems, same with your friends. In actual fact, no-one I know of has had such a bad time with them as I did, so fair enough if you won't take my word for it but as I said, it happened.

I've had my Xbox 360 Elite since April 2008, because my PS3 Original 60GB died on me. So I got it replaced for an 80GB but it said I couldn't play PS2 games on it, so I decoded to swap my PS2 games out for Xbox Originals and buy an Xbox 360. All hardware will malfunction some time or another, but the only things that is wrong with my 360 is that the RF module is broken and the disc tray jams from time to time, I just bought a wired controller and the disc tray is an easy fix.

Yeah well it still affected all consoles. You can pretend like that doesn't matter but it was a pretty big deal. Anyway I have never had a hardware problem with my 360. My first broke due to it being on a stand then a cat's leg caught the cord and took it down. That's why I hate cats. But besides that I have never had a problem. Going on three years with this arcade xbox.

I'm not pretending anything. I'm fully aware that PSN being hacked is a big deal, but I was talking about hardware failure, which that incident wasn't.

And here's the thing regarding your arcade console;

I had the original entry-level console, the one that was in the core pack. 6 months after purchase, RROD.

Approx. 1 month later, I received a replacement - another Core console - I unpacked it, plugged it in and JUST got through the settings when RROD happened again.

Approx. 1 month later, I received a replacement - another Core console (see the pattern here?) - with free wireless control as compo. 4 months on, you guessed it, RROD.

Approx. 1 month later, I received a replacement - ANOTHER Core console - with free plug and play kit and Shadowfall game as compo.

Now this console lasted just over 3 years, then it died. My point is that, while it's all well and good replacing broken consoles, if you are just going to replace them with the model that is proven to be most susceptible to RROD, then you're simply replacing rubbish with rubbish. It was only ever going to be a temporary fix, if that. More like a band-aid over a chainsaw wound.

At some point throughout my whole console switching experience, MS released the Arcade pack console which had an immensely lower chance of RROD occurring. Why didn't they send me THAT console, and save themselves - and me, the customer - all the fuss?

And as for the 5th Xbox I had, it was a second-hand Elite. It lasted a week.

aundeadrockstar lmao, so much for sony even coming close to beating MS =p

HAHAHAAAAAA!

Yes, a botched update is SO much worse than an untold amount of consoles dying due to poor build quality!

I wouldn't class myself as a PS3 fanboy but in the last 7 years I've had 5 Xbox's (all are now dead due to RROD) and yet I'm still on my first - and only - PS3. Please, do not use a little update issue as ammo, all things considered ;)

To be fair, Sony have probably been so busy getting their next-gen console right that they made a small error with this one :P

Guess Someone Needs To Get Outside.

Kai88 Did my last post get removed? The one with failure figures in it? I'm sure I posted it...

Anyhoo, from what I've seen while trawling for info, RROD affected anywhere from 3% upto 32% of Xbox 360's. Some have said that surveys found upto 60%+ were faulty.

On the other hand, most places I've seen have said that the failure rate for PS3 was in the region of around 0.5%

Even if the average for PS3 was placed at 1%, and we took the minimum figure of 3% for Xbox, that's a ratio 3 Xbox's for every PS3.

That's just what I've found so far. As I said, I'm no fanboy, I try to work off of actual figures rather than just opinions. But when you take in to account the fact that MS have never actually release official figures for RROD failures, things seem a tad "iffy".

If you can find info that contradicts anything above, by all means post it (with source) and I'll stand corrected :)

Contradicting info: Sony gets hacked and PSN goes down 100% of consoles affected

AHAHAHAHA BURNNN

No, really. It's not. Imbecile :fp:
