Xbox chief: we have a product for people who can't get online

4.7
Did you think the Xbox 360 was being kept around just for the budget market? It turns out Microsoft's got another sort of customer in mind for the revamped last-gen hardware: the crews of nuclear submarines. Xbox chief Don Mattrick, in response to the backlash over the Xbox One requiring an internet connection, said that "fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360." As an example, he referred to a crew member on a nuclear submarine, who would be better off with the 360, as it's an "offline device." The full quotes are after the break, along with the video -- oh, and Sony's message to submarine crews too.

MATTRICK: "Some of the advantages that you get, of having, a box that is designed to use an online state, so, that, uh, to me is the future-proof choice, and I think people, could've arguably gone the other way if we didn't do it and fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360."

KEIGHLEY: "Right, so stick with 360, that's your message if you don't [inaudible] like it?"

MATTRICK: "Well, if you have zero access to the internet, that is an offline device, I mean, seriously, when I read the blogs, and thought about who's really the most impacted, there was a person who said 'hey, I'm on a nuclear sub,' and I don't even know what it means to be on a nuclear sub but I've gotta imagine it's not easy to get an internet connection."

KEIGHLEY: "[inaudible] playing call of duty multiplayer"

MATTRICK: "Hey, I can empathize, if I was on a nuclear sub, I'd be disappointed."

I am going to be getting a Xbox one. Microsoft has shown support for their online service in the past by getting DLC from companies early, tons of applications, and lots of updates to the dashboard. The $100 more is worth it to me because I feel confident I am buying a good product.

The always online has no effect on me at all(how many people are really going to buy these next gen systems who don't have internet?) The shared games isn't a problem either, I always buy my games new.

A lot of people are complaining about the cost of the console, but $500 is justifiable. The Xbox 360 launched at $400 and isn't even close to as powerful as the Xbox one, and it was 8 years ago. Another way to look at it is, look how many people spend $500-$800 on iPhones, iPads, etc, and a lot of those devices are tossed out and replaced after a year or two. These systems wether it be Xbox or ps4 will probably last you 5 years at minimum,

I do consider myself a hardcore gamer and even though the ps4 is more powerful, look how much more powerful these new gen systems are over current gen. Games look great on current gen (in my opinion) so this massive power and graphics boost from both systems will be great ith either one, and there will probably be a miniscule difference between the two graphics and how the games play.

What it comes down to for me is the online experience and exclusives. I wasn't really interested in any of the exclusives from either company except that titanfall for Xbox one which looks promising. But for the online experience xbox 360 has it near perfect on 360 so if they add things it will only make it that much better. But currently on ps3 everything is really unorganized, hard to maneuver, and they are missing many features. So you have to hope they fix all of that on the ps4 and then also want them to add new features.

Also I may in the minority of people who really am interested in the new kinect as well as some of the 'entertainment' functions the Xbox one has. I am a big sports fan, and do watch lots of television/sports. I have done fantasy sports in the past and will definitely want to try out their new fantasy sports features.

I agree with this guy, I'll be purchasing the unit myself this fall!

I'm going to be honest here, I have owned both the Xbox 360 & PS3. I'll admit I preferred the Xbox 360, but I didn't hate or anything like that against the PS3. However I think Sony has gone a bit too low of basically making their presentation pointing out all the negatives in the Xbox One. Microsoft i'd say had the balls to actually release the information about these online check-ins and so on while Sony, haven't really said anything along those lines. When their could be other things that users aren't happy with. I think the real winner of this battle will be decided when both consoles are released. Regarding the whole Xbox One needing internet, almost everyone has internet, and its not like you have to be there to check in on it so I presume it won't cause any problems with gamers who are only allowed to play at certain times.

Sorcery They're such arrogant ********, the 360 will be void as a console after the release of next generation!

The Xbox was released in 2001, the original Xbox servers were shut down in late 2010, the original Xbox went down when they started development on the Xbox 360 so it won't go void for at least a few years!

PootyMods Microsoft needs to get their **** together. I have been a Xbox 360 fan since it came out but now Im considering having a Ps4 as my primary console.

Still buying both consoles though one release. :)

Why, because you need an internet connection? But you're using the internet now, you will be using it tomorrow and there is like a 1% chance that it goes off. Even if it does go off, it's not gonna be for 24 hours, it'll be like 5 minutes at the most. People need to grow up!

granted almost everyone has internet but lets say you go somewhere with your xbox where there isnt internet then your out of luck and they simply just say go play the 360....i could care less since my xbox doesnt leave my house and i always have interent but there is the select few out there that shouldnt be forgotten its a shame that your forced to give in to microsoft or be left behind

ME0W Eventually they will stop making games for the 360, so then what are people without internet supposed to do?

Hopefully by then they would be able to get a bloody internet connection.

Or just buy a PS4 and give MS the middle finger.

They are taking a big risk though and they have a point, look at your phone, it wouldn't be used nearly half as much if it didn't have internet, it needs internet to do all the cool stuff, they're advancing technology forward a step, and with what they're doing with the cloud, a lot of games are going to suck without internet!

Wagering It makes sense, if you can't keep up with the future, go back to the past.

I totally agree with you.
