Sony triggered a "huge spike in pre-order sales" for PlayStation 4 with Monday's announcement of its £349.99 price, according to Blockbuster.

Pre-orders of Sony's next-generation console are "through the roof", the company told VG247, after reporting record-breaking pre-order numbers for Xbox One last month.

"In the wake of Xbox One's record-breaking pre-order success at Blockbuster last month, the PS4 has received the same incredibly positive reaction, proving that the gaming industry is booming," said Blockbuster.

Head of product at Blockbuster James Morton commented, "We are absolutely thrilled with the amazing response to our pre-order service for both the PS4 and Xbox One."

"We're looking forward to seeing the brand new consoles in our stores along with the latest games to buy or rent. 2013 has been a fantastic year for gaming at Blockbuster and its set to only get better following the announcements at E3."

Sony confirmed a PlayStation 4 price of $399 / €399 / £349 during its press conference on Monday, significantly undercutting Microsoft's Xbox One price of £429 / $499 / €499.
