Microsoft 'prioritized your privacy' with Xbox One Kinect

4.7
Microsoft has addressed privacy concerns regarding its always-on Xbox One Kinect sensor with new details on how users will control the functionality of the tech.

The firm has assured those concerned that Xbox One and Kinect will not upload any personal data online "without your express permission".
While in standby, the sensor listens for the 'Xbox On' command, but will not record or upload conversations.

It also says the sensor bar has "by design" been equipped with options that allow users to determine how responsive it is.

Here's Microsoft's full statement on the matter:

You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you're simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.

You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don't want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say "Xbox Off." When the system is off, it's only listening for the single voice command -- "Xbox On," and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you'll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

You are in control of your personal data: You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission. Here are a few examples of potential future scenarios:
- A fitness game could measure heart rate data to provide you with improved feedback on your workout, allow you to track your progress, or even measure calories burned.
- A card game could allow you to bluff your virtual opponent using your facial expressions.

You can use other inputs to control your games, TV and entertainment experiences: While it's faster to find what you're looking for using your voice and gesture commands with Kinect, you can use a controller, your remote controls or your smart devices instead. And you can use all of these devices when Kinect is paused.

This is just terrible, I don't want to spend an extra hundred dollars for something I will never use.

Michelangelo- The kinect is the reason I a not getting the xbox one

It's a big factor as to why I won't buy it as well, I just want to console. Plain and simple. I don't want to spend extra money on a Kinect that I will never use.

Dont bundle it, 99% of the people dont want the kinect so they're paying $100 extra for something they won't use...

MentalistPosted:

imgur I don't feel like I'm going to be spied on, I just want to be able to play without this...

Me to, they dont need to bundle it. It could lower the price about $100.

slapshot101 Does this really matter, what could people do with the camera feed, watch you play xbox and watch TV? Who walks naked in front of their TV all the time anyways and who has the Kinect facing their bed, you can't play soccer from your bed.

Well, think about it from the view of the major consumers(buyers) of the kinect. It didn't turn out to be the best thing in the world, so they stopped using it. But now you HAVE to have it? Well, seems a bit sketchy to most people. Especially the whole 'It listens for the Xbox On command even if it's off,' Just proves that it has the ability to record conversations/listen in. Now..It'd be pretty weird to spy on people gaming, but you never know what the government/who ever is doing it will do.

I personally, will just have the kinect facing a different way. Maybe towards a photo of a person, incase it has to recognize someone at most times. Try 'n foot it, you know? Lol.

ME0W I don't see why people were scared of it spying on you in the first place. I don't think they have time to spy on the millions of people who own the console.

As I said above, you never know what people will do. There are actually a lot of weirdos out there, and if you think of the millions that would be recorded each day at all times..Well, you're bound to find something amusing to watch. Who knows, maybe you'll stumble across some guy in a meth lab in the middle of Australia?

Oasis If you have nothing to hide then what's the problem...oh unless you think ms is interested in watching some spotty 13yr old rage over halo 6.

Also to point out the obvious seeing as many are too retarded to realize, ms will be selling pc kinect 2.0 units, why you ask? Because they want people to take it apart and experiment just like they did with the first kinect. Do you think they'd encourage [this if they were lying or had something to hide? No.

Well, actually, I'm quite sure they would. It's like saying you're trying to give someone a poisoned. If you're life depended on it, like a slow and painful death to last a million years versus them dieing instantly, wouldn't you coax them into taking that sip? Of course. You can't predict what companies will and will not do, as I've stated above with the other two opinions.

With that ~ I'm done.
