Microsoft says it is listening to negative feedback about Xbox One DRM

4.4
Since unveiling its new console last week, Microsoft has faced a firestorm of criticism regarding the Xbox One and its rumored restrictive digital rights management requirements. According to a manager in Microsoft's Xbox division, however, the company is listening.

In a comment on his blog, Larry Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, said Microsoft is "fully aware of what's going on." Hryb's response was in regard to a comment that said "the entire world is watching Twitter explode" and that "the campaign for no DRM is in full swing." The comment cited a campaign started by gaming website NeoGAF on Sunday that requested Twitter users use a variety of hashtags to inform Sony and Microsoft of negative user stances on DRM issues such as a persistent Internet requirement that has yet to be clarified.

"I am also working on a few things to address it," Hryb wrote in response to the user. "I can't say much more right now. But we are listening."

Microsoft has been fuzzy about what exact requirements users will face with the Xbox One in regards to an Internet connection and how the console will handle the purchase and sale of games. In a statement on an official website, the company has said the console "does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet." Comments from Microsoft executives when the console was announced indicated the device would need to periodically access the Internet as a kind of verification service.

Phil Harrison, a corporate vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, told Kotaku the requirement may be as often as once per day, though Microsoft representatives later said that was a "potential scenario" and no specific time period requirement has been announced yet.

The backlash to Microsoft's DRM plans comes just two months after EA faced similar responses following the launch of "SimCity," which was plagued by server issues that left owners unable to connect to the Internet-required game. EA's chief executive resigned just two weeks after the game launched.

XxNovaDragonXx I am getting so freaking tired of twats complaining over it can't play pre-gen games. The 360 can play Xbox games, but only offline with a weird "safe mode" for it. And the PS3 can't play Pre-gen games anyways. Only the first model production could, which with the new firmware made it so you couldn't. Microsoft has also said they're not forgetting the 360. There will be new dash updates, new games, and even a new model is being made. SO everyone stop freaking complaining about sh*t they never have done, and you're surprised that they still aren't doing it. Playing Pre-gen games on the Xbox One would make it cost over 200$ more than it already will be. That's because it's disc drive is so different than the Original and 360.

Uh, I play pre-gen games all the time. I like to go back to games I've played before and have a fun time. I'm actually playing through GTA: San Andreas right now. So how about you go suck an egg. Most people aren't complaining about the fact that they won't be able to play games like GTA, Halo, JSRF, or what-have-you. They are complaining about the fact that games like Minecraft. A game that is still being updated and continually played. And what about games like State of Decay? All these fresh games that are being made available won't (or have not been confirmed that will) work on the Xbox One. Sure they could keep their 360 and play them on there. But, some people will trade in their old consoles for the new one. And as for the internet argument, some people don't have the option to connect once a day. Sure I do, but there are many who don't that still want to experience the new consoles. And yes, the number of people that don't may be a small percentage, but if a company wants to be a bigger success than its competitors, they should do everything they can to keep fans happy. So how about you stop being a **** asshole about the whole situation? Most of us are a bit more intelligent and know bullshit when we see it. And so far, most of what Sony and Microsoft are trying to sell us is just that. And the only difference in disc drives is the fact it's going to blu-ray. The 360 and Original Xbox were both built using DVD drives. Are you trying to tell me that a blu-ray drive can't read a **** DVD? Get out of here. I'm not saying it wouldn't take a few more days - weeks more work, but it wouldn't be that hard to do. It's mainly just implementing the code that can read the encoding of the older gen games. Oh, and one more thing. The new PS3s can still play PSX games, so get your shit straight before spouting off at the mouth.

Exactly, it's not too late to change things because it shouldn't take too much effort to reprogram the console to remove the always online 'feature'.

It`s a lot bigger than you think, they have to remap the console verification, signing in process and more. Hard to explain, but its longer than a few hours long job.

It's not even always online, you have to be online once and then you can play for the rest of the day. You seem to have internet right now so why does it bother you?
