Call of Duty: Ghosts engine is 'significantly upgraded, not all-new'

Infinity Ward developer admits new game runs on evolved version of old engine

An Infinity Ward developer has revealed that Call of Duty: Ghosts isn't running on an all-new engine, as previously believed, but a 'significantly upgraded' version of the engine used in previous games in the series.

Activision's yearly Call of Duty games have each come with updates and improvements to the engine that powers them. But in its original Call of Duty: Ghosts announcement for next-generation consoles, Activision said it was building "a new engine" and that the game would be powered by "a next generation Call of Duty engine".
According to Infinity Ward animation lead Zach Volker, however, this year's game isn't running on an all-new engine, but a version of the same engine as prior games with 'significant upgrades'.

Speaking with the Official PlayStation Magazine, Volker said, "When we're talking about a new engine we're talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We're not talking about throwing it all away and saying we're starting from the ground up".

He went on to say that it's "impossible to develop a new engine from the ground up in a two year cycle".

Volker elaborated, "What we do is we say, 'okay what are the things that are significant and that we would say that are encompassing of the engine or its visual quality?

"Are those being upgraded in a significant way? Alright, then I think that warrants that we've got a new engine on our hands".

Activision showcased a Call of Duty: Ghosts tech comparison video during Microsoft's Xbox One reveal event last week, showing how in-game assets from this year's new shooter compare to equivalents from 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The reception has, in general, been underwhelming.

Microsoft confirmed during its Xbox One reveal event the continuation of its timed-exclusivity deal with Activision, which sees DLC for Call of Duty games arrive on Xbox before other platforms.

Stealth lol what else is new?
Once again they will tweak a few things and add new guns and claim it's very much improved, but once again not a single ounce of innovation sparks in this game.

Amen to that, another let down from IW in the making..

Tbh, it is no surprise to me, they do it every year and they just do it over and over again, I don't think they'll every get out of the loop, but they'll just keep on 'significantly' improving it even though they don't do much.

I f*cking knew it! I actually said that it looked like an upgraded version of the same engine again just after it was revealed. Thing is though, it's been known for a few years now that Next-Gen was on it's way sooner rather than later, why couldn't they just at least start developing a brand new engine behind the scenes for the Next-Gen? Yeah okay the graphics have been improved, yeah okay there are a few new features, but I think that because it's still the same engine, they're not going to bother with changing the things that need to be changed. We're still going to have the same old perks (more or less), same old Kill/Point/Scorestreaks (probably with yet another new name) and the maps are going to be just as small and badly designed. I honestly do give up with CoD, I think I'll wait a month or 2 after released to see what it's really like before purchasing.

Once again, another dumb ass.

You are really ignorant. You should face the facts, not start a beef.

You're even more ignorant. There is a difference between facts and opinions.

Maybe I'm alone on this, idk.

Listen I really LOVE modern combat/war games. They are incredibly fun. However, we've had so much of this modern stuff lately, and with an upgraded engine leading to great graphics, I really want CoD to make one last World War II game. CoD WaW was okay, but imagine a game like that with todays tech.

UFOs They clearly don't care stop buying cod and then they will realize they need to make a new engine.

You're a dumb ass. No engine is really new. Do you know how long it take to build a new engine from the ground up? Most engines are just copy andn pasted then upgraded.

My name.

Listen little guy you have no idea what you are talking about. I myself make games and program. I built a mini game engine just to do it from the ground up. Do I do it no but I made it from the ground up. I use Unity for my g ames and that is not evolved from some other engine. It was made by people who specialize in making that game engine. Currently the Cod engine is is the ID tech engine (infinity wards version) which is a customized version of the Quake which was brought from the ground up.

You do know that IgnorantChildren is right. Beside in your rant here you basically expanding on his post. Okay, you may "program" and have made a "mini" game engine but i assure you, your engine is nothing compared to the work they have but into the IW engine (COD engine) it took years of advancement to reach this stage, AND THEY WORK IN TEAMS! Come on dude, grow up, we all know that the COD engine is fine, they just need improved gameplay that's all. And before people start to hate of me saying "COD needs a new engine" it takes years (more then 2 by far) to build an engine to suit next-gen demands, you'd rather just upgrade what you have.

Well duh, CoD is known for being CoD.. If you thought they would scrap their engine, you'd be crazy. I wished they would have completely made a new engine, but as long as they're getting the results they have been for the past years, nothing will change.. You'd be crazy if you did change it, but this whole thing is not to say the game won't feel different, because it will. It's not going to feel the same as you'd expect it to.

I wish it were all new. Every CoD player has been waiting for a long time to get a new engine.

I hope that when they say "significantly", they mean almost new.
