Project 007 Won't Be A "Gamification Of A Movie"

IO Interactive certainly appears to be the right studio to create a modern James Bond title. After all, Bond and Agent 47 employ some of the same stealthy methods despite their differing professions. We don't know too much about Project 007 just yet, but IO Interactive head Hakan Abrak revealed some of the studio's ambitions for the title in an interview with IGN.

"We absolutely feel like 20-plus years of training for the agent fantasy, creating an agent that travels the world and globetrotting whatnot, has given us some know-how on that," Abrak said. "But obviously James Bond is a different IP. It's a huge IP. It's not our IP. It's actually the first IP that is not our original IP from the ground up."

It's not just going to be a re-telling of one of Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan's adventures, though. IO is going to tell an original story that won't be the "gamification of a movie." Abrak has high hopes for the project, "It's completely beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future. And equally important and exciting, it's a new Bond. It's a Bond we built from the ground up for gamers. It's extremely exciting with all the tradition and history there is there together to work on this together with the family of creating a new young Bond for gamers; a Bond that gamers can call their own and grow with."

The success of the James Bond IP in gaming has been a mixed bag. Everyone knows the legendary Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64, but the series has always had a fair share of middling games and movie tie-ins. Before Project 007, there hadn't been a James Bond game in over a decade. According to Abrak in a separate interview with Edge Magazine, the James Bond IP holders were sceptical about another Bond video game, but were eventually convinced by IO (thanks, GamesRadar+).

"I don't want to speak too big about it, but I just hope we'll do a thing that will define James Bond in gaming for years to come. And that is not only one game, but that we create a universe for gamers to own for many years to come that we can grow with that next to the Bond in movies," Abrak resolved.

IO Interactive announced the team would be taking a hiatus from its beloved Hitman franchise after the release of Hitman: World of Assassination, a compilation title that incorporates Hitman, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3. Alongside Project 007, IO is working on Project Fantasy, an online fantasy RPG.
