Ed Boon Asks Fans if Classic Mortal Kombat Mode Should Make a Comeback

4.3
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon is once again testing the waters to see if fans would like Mortal Kombat: Deception’s Konquest Mode return in a future game. Mortal Kombat: Deception was the sixth mainline entry in the iconic Mortal Kombat series, released on sixth-generation consoles in late 2004. Picking up where Deadly Alliance left off, Deception saw the fighters of previous Mortal Kombat games face off against a new threat to the realms: the Dragon King Onaga.

One area where Mortal Kombat: Deception stood out from what came before was its updated Konquest Mode, a single-player RPG-like mode that was originally introduced in Deadly Alliance. While that entry’s version was basically a training mode that allowed players to complete missions as existing Mortal Kombat characters, Deception expanded Konquest into a full-fledged storyline featuring a new protagonist named Shujinko - who would later return as a Kameo fighter in Mortal Kombat 1. Players could follow Shujinko as he journeyed to gather the mystical Kamidogu weapons, complete sidequests, and unlock bonus features for the rest of Mortal Kombat: Deception’s game modes.

Ed Boon recently shared a link to an article detailing the impact of Mortal Kombat: Deception’s Konquest mode in the 20 years since the game’s initial 2004 release on Twitter, and playfully asked followers if they would like to see it return someday. Most of the responses he got seemed to want Konquest mode back, either as a new experience with more playable characters or part of a remaster of the 3D Mortal Kombat games of the 2000s. Others argued that the 2005 spin-off Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is due for a comeback instead, while a few users just want to see NetherRealm’s next game after Mortal Kombat 1.

While continuing to support Mortal Kombat 1 remains NetherRealm’s utmost priority, Ed Boon recently revealed that the esteemed fighting game studio has been working on its next project for the past three years. While a new Mortal Kombat game is certainly a possibility, many fans believe that this mystery title will instead be the long-hoped-for Injustice 3 or a brand-new IP altogether.

There is still plenty of content on the horizon for Mortal Kombat 1 as well, as NetherRealm has yet to release the guest characters for Kombat Pack 2 - consisting of the Ghostface Killer from Scream, Terminator 2: Judgement Day’s shapeshifting T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian. Ed Boon is always asking Mortal Kombat fans what they want to see in future DLC and games, and it looks like both he and gamers alike are feeling nostalgic for Mortal Kombat: Deception’s standout Konquest Mode.
