Black Ops 6 Is Ditching Last Gen For This Fan-Requested Feature

3.6
A highly requested feature returning to Black Ops 6 won't be on last-generation consoles. According to an official post on the Call of Duty blog, Theater Mode, which will be making its return in this year's iteration of the first-person shooter franchise, won't be on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One consoles.

The following is what Activision had to say regarding the fan-requested mode:

Theater Mode: Though not available in the Beta, the Multiplayer experience of Black Ops 6 brings a fully featured Theater Mode at launch, allowing you a robust suite of viewing options, including the ability to watch, pause, slow down, speed up, and play back your previous gameplay, including the ability to take screenshots. Note that Theater Mode is not available on previous-generation consoles (PlayStation® 4 and Xbox One).

So far, this is the only segment of Black Ops 6 that won't be on last-generation consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One versions will still feature the campaign, multiplayer and zombies modes. This isn't nearly the same situation that PS3 and Xbox 360 owners faced when Black Ops 3 was released in 2015.

Back then, a pared down version of Black Ops 3 was released on what was then last-generation hardware. That version did not include the game's campaign, as well as the Weapon Paint Shop and eSports tools. It solely had multiplayer and zombies, and was priced lower.

Still, it represents the first major instance where there will be a lack of parity between the dual releases. Over the past few years, gamers have grown frustrated with the number of dual releases, believing that the power of current-generation consoles isn't being fully realized.

For the most part, developers and publishers, owing to console shortages and large existing install bases, have continued to release titles on all platforms. However, more and more titles have ditched last-gen hardware, such as the recent release of Star Wars Outlaws.

That said, it seems likely that massively popular games like sports titles and Call of Duty will still see some sort of last-gen release for the foreseeable future. But, Black Ops 6's recent move does suggest that these games could begin to pare down the versions that are released on older hardware before eventually ditching things altogether. Only time will tell when Activision does opt to leave last-gen behind for good. Not including Theater Mode certainly suggests that time could be drawing closer.
