PlayStation 5 Pro Rumoured to Ditch Disc Drive

4.2
A sketch of the PlayStation 5 Pro has leaked online, hinting that Sony's upcoming console might forgo a disc drive altogether.

Although Sony hasn't officially announced the PS5 Pro, it's widely expected that the next, more powerful version of the PS5 will carry that name.

With the expected beefed-up specs, it appears the console might sacrifice physical media support, according to reliable leaker billbil_kun.

The leaker first hinted that a new version of familiar hardware would be revealed soon. As predicted, this turned out to be the PS5 Pro. On Dealabs, billbil_kun shared a sketch of what the PS5 Pro might look like.

This sketch strongly suggests the console wonโ€™t come with a built-in disc drive โ€” though the leaker did note that the information isn't confirmed yet.

The leaker also mentioned that Sony will indeed call this new version the PS5 Pro. It's possible that the sketch represents a digital-only version of the console.

However, billbil_kun speculates that this could be a cost-saving move by Sony. If true, it would give Sony the opportunity to sell a separate external disc drive for those who prefer physical games.

This decision, if accurate, raises questions about how the PS5 Pro will be received. For some gamers, going entirely digital could be a dealbreaker, while others might appreciate the streamlined design.

Interestingly, some PlayStation fans believed they spotted the PS5 Pro in the Astro Bot trailer shown during the June State of Play showcase. Sony has also recently increased the price of the base PS5 console in Japan, which you can read more about here.

Whether the PS5 Pro will indeed lack a disc drive or if this is simply an unconfirmed rumour, only time will tell. Fans will be eagerly waiting to see how this potential shift towards a digital-only console plays out.
