From the new Kameo fighters mechanic to its decision to fully commit to the multiverse trope, Mortal Kombat 1 divided opinion within the series’ fanbase for a number of reasons, though the brutal fighter has nonetheless enjoyed impressive sales.

WB Games and developer NetherRealm Studios have announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over 4 million units worldwide. The fighter crossed the milestone in under a year, having launched in September of 2023. As of January, it had sold over 3 million units worldwide.

Next month is likely to be another big one for Mortal Kombat 1, with WB Games and NetherRealm set to release a large-scale expansion in the form of Khaos Reigns. In addition to a new story campaign, the expansion will also bring six new playable characters and the return of Animalities.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns launches on September 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
