MultiVersus Players Aren't Happy With One Change From The Beta

MultiVersus fans are expressing their discontent over a change to character portraits from the beta version of the game. With the full launch of Warner Brothers' platform fighter fast approaching, anticipation for MultiVersus is steadily rising, though that isn't stopping players from calling out certain changes in the game they aren't fond of.

Unlike other free-to-play fighting games, the lead-up to MultiVersus' launch has been a bit unconventional. After a swath of leaks and rumors flooded the internet, Warner Brothers formally unveiled the crossover fighting title in November 2021 and gave it an initial release window of 2022. Though MultiVersus was made playable to the public that year, it was only launched as an open beta that lasted for about 11 months. MultiVersus was unexpectedly taken offline, however, after the beta wrapped up, which led many to question the game's future. Fortunately, though, Warner Bros. announced earlier this year that MultiVersus would finally return on May 28, 2024. With the title being back in the public eye, some fans are already criticizing the platform fighter for one notable omission from the final version of the game.

Reddit user Test_Name19 made a post on the r/MultiVersusTheGame subreddit pointing out an aspect of MultiVersus that they considered a "mega downgrade" from the open beta: the character portraits. In the original version of the game, the fighter select screen had portraits containing hand-drawn 2D artwork for each playable character in MultiVersus. Judging by the pre-release screenshots, however, it seems like the game's latest build eschews this visually appealing artwork in favor of standard 3D models, which have considerably less lighting and texture detail in comparison. This change irritated Test_Name19 so much that they "sent in a customer support query" to the developers in hopes that they might take the feedback into consideration.

Some MultiVersus fans responded to the Reddit post and provided some possible explanations as to why this seemingly unnecessary change was made. One user suggested that the use of 3D models on the fighter select screen could make it easier for the characters' designs to match their respective portraits whenever players choose to equip one of MultiVersus' cool variant skins. Others asserted, meanwhile, that the 3D models could just be mere placeholders that the developers might get rid of in the final version of the game. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, the removal of the 2D character portraits has gone down as an odd aesthetic choice in the eyes of many fans.

Despite this change, MultiVersus' big relaunch is generating a lot of hype from fans, especially with new characters, huge combat changes, and improved matchmaking experiences recently being revealed for the game. Although the upcoming platform fighter is what many may consider a Super Smash Bros. clone, MultiVersus can still make a name for itself by filling a void in the highly competitive free-to-play landscape when it releases on May 28, 2024 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
