EA Play is Getting More Expensive Soon

3.7
Electronic Arts' EA Play video game subscription service will soon be increasing in price. A new report reveals that Electronic Arts will be raising the cost of its EA Play service later this summer, with several tiers of the online service becoming pricier for players.

EA Play officially launched almost a decade ago, offering a wide range of video games for users to play through and enjoy. From RPGs like DragonAge: Inquisition to fast-paced first-person shooters like DICE's popular Battlefield series, EA Play features something for nearly every type of gamer. EA Play was originally called EA Access and Origin Access before Electronic Arts announced it would be combining both services into one subscription-based offering called EA Play.

According to a new report from GamesIndustry.biz, Electronic Arts is starting to raise the price of the standard tier for its EA Play service. Emails are reportedly being sent out to users notifying them of the approaching price increases, both when they will start and how much more expensive they will become. EA Play is far from the only way to play EA games, with Electronic Arts partnering with Epic Games and Microsoft in the past. However, these impending price increases mark an unfortunate trend gamers have had to face recently.

EA Play Announces Price Increases
Standard tier increased from $4.99 to $5.99 per month
Pro tier increased from $14.99 to $16.99 per month

The first tier of EA Play will rise from $4.99 a month to $5.99 a month, jumping from $29.99 to $39.99 for users who opt to use the yearly billing cycle. This tier is not the only one set to become more expensive, however, with the price of the Pro tier also rising from $14.99 to $16.99. This marks a $20 increase in the annual plan, with the Pro tier now costing $199.99 yearly. These price increases will officially go into effect starting May 10 for current subscribers. However, according to IGN, the new prices have already started taking effect for new subscribers. While EA Play offers a wide range of games, several major EA titles have shut down recently, and with these upcoming price increases, potential subscribers may be second-guessing using the service.

EA Play is far from the first video game subscription service to be hit by rising costs. Price hikes continue to affect various subscription services industry-wide. Last June, Microsoft announced that both Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions would be rising in cost. Sony followed suit later that same year, revealing that the price of an annual PlayStation Plus subscription would also be rising. Xbox and PC players can actually take advantage of Xbox Game Pass and EA Play, with both services working hand-in-hand, allowing Microsoft subscribers access to EA Play's large library of games at no additional cost.
