Elden Ring Won't Be Getting A Sequel Or Any More DLC

4
Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree is officially launching this summer, as revealed by a flashy new gameplay trailer which released earlier today. It'll finally give us some more Elden Ring goodness to play through after over two years since the launch of the base game, but you'll need to make sure you savor every moment, as FromSoftware has explained that it won't be revisiting The Lands Between any time soon.

In an interview with IGN Japan (translated by a ResetEra user) following the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that FromSoftware currently has "no plans" for a potential sequel or any additional DLC, despite it being the studio's biggest and most successful launch in the studio's illustrious history.

While Miyazaki doesn't completely rule out the potential for a return to Elden Ring in the future, he explains that FromSoftware will have "a big break". It's up to your interpretation of that comment whether he means a big break from development or a big break from just Elden Ring, but it definitely looks like Elden Ring may be a one-time thing for FromSoftware.

However, at this point, there are no plans for additional DLC or "ELDEN RING 2." Even if it's not the complete end to the story, I think this DLC will be a big break. - Hidetaka Miyazaki

While it's slightly disappointing that we won't be heading back to The Lands Between any time soon, it's not all that surprising that FromSoftware wants to move onto something else. Demons' Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Bloodborne were also standalone titles, despite fans of the latter desperately crying out for a remake or remaster of some kind.

FromSoftware has also never really been a studio to chase trends or make games solely based on their past success, even if they're both critically and commercially successful. In fact, FromSoftware has never actually released two titles in the same series back to back, having always released something different between big series titles like Dark Souls, at least in the studio's more recent history.

We can definitely expect FromSoftware's next title to be something completely different, and fans always have their fingers crossed for something Bloodborne-related. There have been several rumors swirling in recent months, with one suggesting that the title was in the works for PS5 and PC "at one point", though it may have potentially been scrapped or shelved.
