New rumors about next-gen Xbox CPU specs hit the web

4.6
Microsoft is still not saying anything officially about their plans for the successor to the Xbox 360. That hasn't stopped a number of rumors about the console from leaking, however, and the most recent claims involve the next Xbox's processor.

The rumors talk on how AMD is creating the processor for Microsoft.
The CPU inside the console, code named Durango, has two modules, each with four x86 cores inside, according sources sharing these rumors. Each of those cores reportedly runs on a single thread at 1.6Ghz. Also, the cores each feature "a 32 KB instruction cache (I-cache) and a 32 KB data cache (D-cache), and the 4 cores in each module share a 2 MB level 2 (L2) cache. In total, the modules have 8 hardware threads and 4 MB of L2."

The Xbox 720 CPU apparently has a clock speed of 1.6 Ghz, which is actually half the speed of the cores inside the current Xbox 360. The Xbox 360, launched in 2005, has a PowerPC-based processor with three cores and a clock speed of 3.2 Ghz.

Reduction I wonder why they would cut the Ghz in half on a next-gen console? Seems strange to me...

id guess it has to do with keeping the rrod away,im pretty sure with less Ghz it would run cooler and in turn help keep boards from warping.

It would run cooler with a better cooling system my CPU is clocked at 4.5ghz and it has a decent cooler which keeps it in the low 60c range so thats all microsoft needed to do with the 360 was redesign the coolers.

That would mean making the Xbox the size of a standard PC case..Its a tiny little box so its not going to cool well

Yeah the xbox has a beastly fan but it only has the one, if they want to crank out better specs they are going to need to cool it with more fans.

Feet I don't like rumors...

Haha , me either, they will say all this stuff, then the 720 willl suck.

The 720 will suck? Keep living in a box, Microsoft won't settle for anything else then number one. I believe that's how all gaming companies think but the only difference is Microsoft has been pulling through and will continue with there next Gen system.
