PlayStation 4 Not Backwards Compatible With Retail or Digital Games

4.7
In a conversation with journalists, the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios said that PS3 games - both the retail and downloadable variety - will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work with the new console, neither will any games you downloaded. This means that titles like Journey, The Unfinished Swan, Shatter, and hundreds of other games available in the digital space will not be carried over to PlayStation 4, in addition to the collection of PS3 discs you already have.

However, you *will* be able to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on the PlayStation 4 by downloading them. The PlayStation 4 will include the services Gaikai. They offer cloud storage, and this is where you will most likely buy your old games from. The bad thing is, if you already own a game and you want to play it on the PS4, you will have to buy it from the online store in order to play it.

“There are two ways to play legacy content: emulation, or cloud services from Gaikai. But native support of digital games from PS3, no, sorry. It doesn’t work.”

There is a very simple solution to this.

Keep your PS3.

AwesomeSauce69 Welcome to xbox every PS3 user :) You will most defiantly enjoy your stay.

And you know the new Xbox will have backwards compatibility, how? Sony have done this to keep the costs of the console down. It is based of completely different architecture from the PS3. To have backwards compatibility they would have had to add in a PS3 inside the PS4.

since the xbox was built more like a computer it would make the transition much easier then the ps3 to ps4 i would imagine.

Looks like all new consoles are going to completely and utterly suck, I was thinking about getting a playstation after the new xbox comes out because the NGX is most likely not going to be backwards compatible but I guess this one isn't either. Looks like I can't play my old Ps2 games that I absolutely loved. Well I most likely am going to head over to PC gaming since every single game creator is completely out of their minds. Anybody with me?

That is ridiculous making us buy the games again if we want to play them on the PS4.

Doesn't affect me. If I want to play older games, i'll use an older system to play the games...
