Starfield Players Are Sick Of The Game's "Useless" Dialogue Options

4.5
The majority of Starfield players seem to be in agreeance: the game's writing is "bad" and the dialogue options are "useless", according to a recent post over on the Starfield subreddit, which has amassed over 6,000 upvotes and 1,000 comments at the time of writing this article.

The post was made earlier this week by thedudester125, who took to the game's subreddit to express their frustration with the game's biggest issue, its writing. "I can forgive how useless ships are or how repetitive the environments are if there’s interesting story and characters. But my god, the writing is bad," the user said.

As noted by the user in their post (and echoed by fellow Starfield players), it's not just the general story writing that's bad, but the dialogue options too. Many players believe that Starfield's dialogue options come down to three different types: good, evil, or idiotic. Each option is supposed to lead players on a slightly different path, but one user says that dialogue is "useless" because "every choice is the same 99% of the time."

This sentiment was also shared by another player, who said that Starfield's poor writing is due to "the lack of any branching paths to quests." They continued by saying that all dialogue options lead to the same end result, which means there really are no "choices" in Starfield, ultimately defeating the purposes of having dialogue options at all.

The biggest issue is truly the writing.

While users clearly aren't happy with Starfield's writing, it has been noted by fellow players that this isn't anything new for Bethesda. "This has been noticeable since at least Fallout 4. Your dialogue choices are: normal human answer, sarcastic, edgelord, dumb," one user said.

Starfield's writing is a hot topic in the community, but it isn't the only problem with the game. The game recently fell to "mostly negative" on Steam, with over 7,000 recent reviews slating Starfield by calling it "boring", "mediocre", and "a game that has an excess of nothingness." Overall, Starfield has a "mixed" review badge on Steam, but things certainly aren't looking good for Bethesda's new Space RPG.

I've played a lot of point & click games, and I've came across most of their dialogue being bad too LMAO

Frog Bethesda's writing has nearly always been terrible. Even Fallout 3 has generally terrible writing, although it is somewhat better than Fallout 4 and Starfield. This has been a constant problem with Bethesda games since Skyrim, they simply don't put any effort into writing.

I agree, in fallout new Vegas i would want to press all the options cause there would sometimes be actually funny things, or more lore or something of entertainment value, the writing is the problem, not the idea of having unnecessary lines. But with that I guess NV was made by obsidian and I didn't enjoy fallout 3 as much so maybe that was the reason I liked it so much

I hate that as well in games. Like yeah you can talk or reply but it's pointless convos that are dumb and don't change or have other options or even matter.
