The Game Awards 2023 is officially in the books, but not everyone left the event happy. Shortly before Respawn Entertainment, developer of Apex Legends, Titanfall, and many more, took to the stage, host Geoff Keighley seemed to put an added emphasis on the word 'Titanfall'. Many took it to be a tease for Titanfall 3, but were left disappointed.

Instead, Respawn Entertainment revealed a new crossover event for its hugely popular Battle Royal title, Apex Legends. On January 9th, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is crossing over into the world of Apex Legends in a special one-time event. Details on the event are still sparse, but Apex events usually include new skins, a new reward tracker, and possibly even a new limited-time mode.



Sure, this is certainly good news for Apex Legends fans, with a bunch of fans calling the event "unexpected" and "awesome", but the event turned out to be another disappointment for Titanfall fans who are still expecting a third iteration to be announced.

Before Respawn took to the stage to make the announcement, Geoff Keighley introduced the studio by listing some of their well-known titles. For some reason, when Keighley got to 'Titanfall' he added a huge emphasis on the word, almost as if he was teasing what was about to come. Fans were then left disappointed as absolutely no Titanfall news was present at The Game Awards.

A post on Reddit has now garnered over 3,600 upvotes, as many express their disappointment with what was likely an accidental tease by Keighley. "We got baited by the fucking game awards, this is a new low guys," one user said. Another simply said, "My heart is broken…"

Titanfall Fans Are Starting To Lose Hope
For a long time now, Titanfall fans have been certain that a third installment was never going to see the light of day. Not only was Respawn finding huge success with Apex Legends, the studio has also developed two massive Star Wars games. It was also revealed by a former developer that Titanfall 3 was internally canceled after Respawn decided to turn the project into Apex Legends.

However, hope was once again ignited after Titanfall 2 received its first notable update in years back in September. The update fixed the game's servers after it was taken over by hackers all the way back in 2021. Many believed that Respawn had simply abandoned support for the game in order to focus its resources on Apex Legends.

Shortly after the game's servers were fixed, Respawn added a cryptic note to a set of Apex Legends patch notes:

Incoming Transmission…. Subject: Nessie….1394521200...1477638000...1549267200

The code was decrypted by fans as the release dates of Titanfall, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends. Whether or not Respawn meant anything by this tease is unclear, but it seems likely that the studio has something up its sleeve. Given that Apex Legends is set in the same universe as Titanfall, it's also possible that this is nothing more than a tease for a potential crossover. A leak from last year indicated that maps from Titanfall 2 could be making their way to Apex Legends for a potential limited-time mode, which means the tease could be related to that.
