Sony fined £250k over 'preventable' PSN hack

4.6
Sony is facing a £250,000 penalty for what is deemed a 'security failure' during the PlayStation Network hack that affected 77 million accounts in April 2011.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) stated that the attack was preventable, and that there was "no disguising that Sony is a business that should have known better".

Sony is now preparing an appeal, in order to reverse the ruling.

"PlayStation Europe notes that the ICO recognises Sony was the victim of 'a focused and determined criminal attack' and that 'there is no evidence that encrypted payment card details were accessed', and that 'personal data is unlikely to have been used for fraudulent purposes'."

Sony chief executive, Kaz Hirai apologized for the security breach one month after the attack brought the entire network down.

FrenzyRG Im starting to hate sony. Cant wait for xbox 720 so I can get that instead.

Hate them for what? Your believing this sh*t that the media feeds to you ok it was maybe preventable if there was a future teller at their building that told them there would be a ddos attack thats the risk people take of putting there credit card on any platform stop being lazy and walk to the store and buy a ore paid card for your platform with the credit card you hate Sony for what? This wont even be affecting you it's not like your paying for the cost and XBL is not free for online

XBL isn't free but stop being such a cheap ass. Microsoft has better security. A WAAAY better chat system and can play original Xbox games, unlike the PS3 which can only play PS1 AND PS3 games. Oh and Xbox has DLC privileges too so we get any DLC first before you guys do. Maybe Sony will learn not to prosecute a college student for wanting to play PS2 games.

Breezy4G 250k is not that much for such a large company.
What could they have done to prevent it?

It is a fair bit, specially considering Sony aren't in the best financial position at the moment.

Oh no! Sony, a multi-million pound company, are fined 250,000. That is not a lot of money considering the damage that could have been caused with 77 million accounts compromised!
