Next-Generation PS4 and Xbox 720 set for $400 price range

4.7
Colin Sebastian of Baird Equity Research has said that the new generation consoles will most likely come in around the $400 price range. This number isn't just a random number he came up with, but is based off-the-record meetings with a "number of companies" at CES 2013.

"Given the fragile state of the console game market, we expect the E3 trade show in June will take on added significance, most likely providing the industry with the first public opportunity to examine next-generation hardware," Sebastian wrote in his notes.

"Our checks suggest that next-generation console hardware will be largely built from 'off the shelf' high-end PC components, along with hybrid physical/digital distribution models, enhanced voice controls and motion sensing (Kinect integration with every Xbox), and broad multi-media capabilities," he added.

"Moreover, a PC-based architecture (Intel chips in the case of Xbox) should have a number of advantages over custom-developed silicon: for one, the learning curve for software developers will be shorter than completely new technology.

"Second, the cost of production and retail price points should be lower than prior console launches."

"Third, it will be easier to build online services around PC chip architecture, including flexible business models (free-to-play, subscriptions) and multi-media (over the top) content offerings. For Microsoft, this design will also allow for more integration with Windows 8 and Windows Mobile devices."

Sebastian has said that the Xbox 720 is expected to release in November, while Sony has had some "early production issues" and the PS4 could be released after the Xbox 720.

SovietRussia I bet you that the games are going to jump up to around 75 dollars a pop for the consoles. The have been slowly raising the prices of games every since video games came out.

False..PS2 and Xbox1 games were $50, some had special editions that were more than $50. Then 360 and PS3 games were $60, and more for special editions. So if by "slowly" you mean every 4 years, then you're correct.

Not all 360 games even come out at $60, just the popular ones.

Never thought of that... Maybe, but I hope not.

I'll probably save up and see what one I want later

I will probably not buy it, unless my xbox breaks. But like SovietRussia said, the games will probably sky rocket up $75-$90 easily. Nice job M$

Agility I am not buying it for $400 that is not worth it at all , all microsoft and sony is are money hoardeers

I see you're 15 years old. I'm guessing your mommy and daddy aren't willing to spend $400 on a console? Then go out and get a job. If you get a job next week you'll surely have $400 by the time the next gen consoles come out. When the xbox 360 first came out the core version was $300 and the premium was $400. The PS3 was $600. So I don't see how $400 is unreasonable.
$400 is unreasonable because you can build a PC for that price that will run pretty much any game, and jtlyk I have a job, yet I don't have that kind of money to just throw out the window.

You will need to drop atleast $1000 on a PC if you want to run the lastest games at the highest settings. $400 will make you a shitty PC with that can barely run the lastest games on the lowest settings. My brothers 7850 was $200 something, and his 3750k was $230 I think. That's already $430, and you still need a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, psu, case, and for some an operating system. My parents bought my brother and I the $400 xbox 6 years ago for Christmas and it still works, and when I go back home I still play it. So I don't know how that's throwing money out the window.

Well i've done it :/ my PC cost just over 400 and I can run any game I want on some of the Highest settings. Your brother clearly doesn't know what he is doing when it comes to buying his parts and I also have an xbox, games on there cost an upwards of 40 whereas on the PC they cost significantly less the games also run alot smoother and have nicer communities in general than on Xbox.

What type of graphics card and cpu do you have? By any game do you mean runescape and minecraft? There are graphic cards like the GTX 680 that cost $500+. The people buying that must be pretty damn stupid and not know anything about computers. Because while they're spending $500 on a graphics card, you can spend $400 on a case, psu, cpu, hard drive, ram, graphics card, and motherboard that can outperform their system.

DeadlyDasher, you can build a computer between $400-$500 that will outperform pretty much any new console, as long as you don't buy the parts from your local store that cost twice as much. It might not last as long (Newer hardware will be released sooner, if it's not already out of date) but it'll still be better than a console.

The amount of games that I have played on console that have rubbish frame rates is terrible, it's not worth it.

But all console games are optimized for the console, no upgrading over the years needed. My computer built back in 2009? or something was already outdated in 2011 and I spent $300. This isn't about console graphics vs pc graphics directly. A console will run a console game at the highest settings. A $400 PC won't run any graphic demanding game on the highest setting. You will now say "But a console won't either" to which I will say "It's a PC game, not a console game."

A decent $400 computer will run most, most games on high detail settings if you purchase the right parts. Why spend $400 on a console that can never really be upgraded, and you have no control over, that has games upwards of $100 or more?

And I'm aware you never have to upgrade the console, but they never really up the games either, obviously.

Even if you start with a $400 computer, you can at least upgrade it on the cheap as time progresses.

No, for $400 you can't build a computer that can run the most graphic depending games on the highest settings. Unless you already have the PSU,OS,Case,HDD,RAM,Motherboard, and the CPU. And idk where you're from but in the USA, games are only $60. I still play my old N64 from time to time because it's fun. Having fun > having good graphics imo. And most of everyone I know has a console and doesn't want to drop $800-$1000 for a good gaming PC. So since most of my friends, classmates, family, etc have consoles, I play that more than anything.

Over here in Australia, games have cost over $100 in the local store. Also, I'm not talking 'the most graphic depending games on the highest settings' but decent, reasonably high settings. And I totally agree that graphics aren't everything, I play plenty of older games, but seriously, spend around $400, get a decent build, upgrade it as time progresses, and do whatever the hell you want on it instead of just games.

400$ on highest quality? Can I get some of that what you've been smoking please
[/spoil]

My Pc cost me $483 with rebates and i can run skyrim with a daemon ini on ultra high without a problem

u guys are retarded?with 400$ you wont get ****..u maybe run minecraft with that price -.-

You could build a PC for $500 that'll run everything on medium to high.

Said nobody....I will forgive your ignorance since you're 14 years old.
