Konami Confirms Development Team For MGS3 Remake

4
At last week’s PlayStation Showcase, Konami announced Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the beloved Metal Gear Solid 3.

In a subsequent statement on the official Metal Gear Twitter account, Konami touched on various aspects of the remake and the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection. The statement was credited to the ‘Development team’, which piqued fans' curiosity. Why had it not been signed off with Konami or the external studio behind the remake?

In a statement given to Ethan Gach of Kotaku, Konami revealed that the game is being developed by Konami internally with assistance from Virtuos, a Singaporean outfit that specialises in ports and remasters.

With the announcement that this is an internal Konami project, fans became somewhat sceptical. It’s been almost a decade since Snake Eater’s original release, and Konami has changed a lot since then. The Japanese entertainment giant has largely taken the role of publisher in recent years, doling out its most famous IPs to external studios.

Konami’s own recent track record of development has been mixed. 2018’s Metal Gear Survive was panned by critics for being a cash-grab and came in the wake of several Konami controversies. Then came Contra: Rogue Corps in 2019 which brought hefty criticism from fans for being neglectful of past games in the series and having bland gameplay. When it comes to disappointing fans of popular IPs, Konami went three for three when they released Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, an unremarkable mobile game.

It was no surprise that some fans were disappointed to hear that Konami would be handling this project personally. Notably, industry content creator Yong Yea expressed some concern about the revelation, prompting others to also do so in reply.

Virtuos, the studio that will be aiding Konami with the remaster, is responsible for several recent triple-A ports including Horizon Zero Dawn to PC and NieR: Automata for the Nintendo Switch, with the latter being described as a “miracle port” by GamesRadar. However, the company is not without its failures as its recent remaster of The Outer Worlds has been heavily criticised for performance issues.

Naturally, a Kojima-less Metal Gear game is always going to court controversy. However, as Snake Eater Delta is a remake of Kojima’s work, there have been fewer concerns from the community regarding direction, in comparison to Metal Gear Survive, anyway.

We have seen little of Delta so far besides the announcement trailer and a couple of shots from the opening level of Snake Eater, Virtuous Mission. The game does not yet have a release date or window.
