Rumor: 'Xbox TV' set-top box in progress, to debut pre-holiday 2013

4.6
Microsoft is developing a set-top box that provides access to its entertainment features, made as a low-cost alternative to its full console, The Verge reports, citing anonymous sources.

The device, dubbed "Xbox TV," supports "casual" games and runs on Windows 8, with an "always-on" chipset that allows for quick boot-up and resumption of programs, the report says. Xbox TV would be part of a broader attempt to scale its products, making them available on a range of devices, such as Microsoft Surface, SmartGlass (for iOS pictured above) and smartphones. It is expected to be revealed before the holidays next year, The Verge says.

Microsoft provides the following statement regarding any future set-top box plans: "Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention."

That's certainly not a "No, we'd never do that" kind of statement.

kittie That's going to be sick, being able to watch TV straight from the Xbox will be so convenient.

Vlif They Should put time on the 720. not this! well, i guess some people with love it but I use my Xbox for games and Netflix... that's all i need

Then why would you need a 720? If you've got all you need? I don't really think a new console is really needed any time soon imo. :)

I really don't think people understand what this is going to be. It is basically the same thing as Vizio's new costar box. It will give you access to all of the apps like Netflix, hulu, and others. It is not for games. It is essentially making your receiver for company's like Directv pointless as we move toward a more "All-in-one" approach to consoles. Video game systems will rather be called home-entertainment systems and that is the only thing that you will need for your tv.

Eh, I have a cable box under my xbox. I can just switch the TV channel. No need for this, well for me anyways. And I don't want to watch "Xbox TV" on my smartphone, I'd get called a geek.
