According to a new job listing, the long-awaited multiplayer spin-off of The Last of Us could be coming to PlayStation 4 as well. While information about the new title remains scarce, the listing on the Naughty Dog's website hints that The Last of Us Multiplayer will release on PS4 just like its younger sibling, the PlayStation 5.

The studio is now on the lookout for an associate multiplayer quality assurance tester, who must have a working knowledge of both PS4 and PS5 systems. The job description suggests The Last of Us Multiplayer will be a cross-gen title just like TLOU 2. In addition, the listing page states "Join us as we bring that same sensibility and passion to our first standalone multiplayer project!" hinting at The Last of Us, which is currently believed to be the only multiplayer game in development at Naughty Dog. Needless to say, this assumption could turn out to be false, as there is no confirmation from the studio at the moment.

Naughty Dog could be releasing the multiplayer version simultaneously on PC and PS5 before downscaling it to run on PS4. There remains a possibility that the game will be a PS5 console exclusive to drive its sales numbers. However, it seems logical to bring The Last of Us Multiplayer to PS4 given how big a player base the console has. Also, a PS4 port may result in a bad version for PS5 visually. Sill, considering the multiplayer spin-off has been in development for at least two years, it would not be surprising if it comes to the PS4 at launch.

PlayStation's internal studios have had a good track of bringing their games to old-gen hardware, as Sony Santa Monica's God of War Ragnarok also launched for PS4 back in November 2022. Neil Druckmann, Co-President of Naughty Dog, revealed during the 2022 Summer Fest that The Last of Us Multiplayer is on its way. The spin-off does not have a firm release date yet.

In January of this year, Naughty Dog gave fans another tease of its multiplayer project with a piece of artwork, claiming that more information on the title will be shared later this year. "The project is shaping up to be a fresh, new experience from our studio, but one rooted in Naughty Dog’s passion for delivering incredible stories, characters, and gameplay," the studio said in a press release.
