Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Will Remain Offline Indefinitely

3.3
FromSoftware has announced that online services for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be kept offline indefinitely.

Nine months ago, player-versus-player (PvP) servers for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 were taken offline after a security vulnerability was discovered. Dark Souls 3 was the first to return, springing back to life two months ago (before briefly going back down a month later).

FromSoftware has now announced the return of online functionality to Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. However, this is only for the DX11 version of the game. The original DX9 base game will be getting its online features back “at a later date.”

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, the first version of the series to hit PC, will not be coming back online. The tweet from the Dark Souls account reads, “We have determined that we will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012,” it continues “We apologize for the long wait and ask for your understanding in this matter.”

As for Dark Souls Remastered, a follow-up tweet stated “Work on the restoration of online services for the PC version of Dark Souls Remastered is still underway, and we will inform you when they return. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.”

While the shutting down of online services on the pre-remaster version of the original Dark Souls is likely to affect very few players, it’s worth noting that the Prepare to Die edition currently has a far more extensive mod catalogue than the remaster.

The indefinite ending of online services on the Prepare to Die edition won’t affect players’ ability to play offline or their current characters and save files.
