Terraria first Steam game to hit a million positive reviews

3
Sandbox adventure game Terraria turned 11 earlier this year, but it's still going strong on Steam, as it recently became the first title on the platform to surpass 1 million positive reviews. As of October 21, the indie title had actually accumulated 1,005,667 positive reviews, as opposed to only 22,122 negative ones, as a Reddit user pointed out. The positive reviews have increased by nearly 300 as of the time of this writing.

Terraria holds a lead of nearly 150,000 positive reviews over its closest competitor, Gary's Mod, which is technically not a game with defined goals and is described as a "physics sandbox" in its official Steam description. However, Gary's Mod also had quite the head start in the race to a million, having released on Steam in 2006. Currently in third and fourth place in the rankings are AAA titles Left 4 Dead 2 and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, which currently have 640,611 and 629,964 positive reviews, respectively.

Created by Indie developer Re-Logic and released in May 2011, Terraria won over fans with its simplistic 2D, pixilated styling reminiscent of the 16-bit era, earning it a "generally favorable" score of 83 on Metacritic. Two sequels had been planned — one announced in 2013 and a second in 2015 — though neither ever came to fruition. Rather, Re-Logic has stayed true to its original product, continuing to offer free updates, including new content, more than a decade after its release.

As an overall Steam Score, Terraria still performs well, coming in at a respectable sixth place, with a 97.11 percent rating. The only games ahead of Terraria using that statistic are Portal 2 (97.7 percent), People Playground (97.49 percent), Vampire Survivors (97.39 percent), Hades (97.38 percent), and Stardew Valley (97.24 percent).

At one time, Steam scored games simply by dividing their number of positive reviews against their total number of reviews, but the gaming service abandoned that method in 2017 in favor of an algorithm that adjusts games' scores based on a certainty score that increases with the total number of reviews. Even using the old system, which can be skewed in favor of less-popular games, Terraria still reaches the upper echelons of the platform with a 97.85 percent.
