PlayStation 5's DualSense Edge Controller Releases In January

3.8
Via an official blog post, PlayStation has revealed the release date and price of the upcoming 'pro version' of its DualSense controller. Titled the DualSense Edge and revealed back in Gamescom 2022, the controller will cost $199.99 USD and will be available globally on January 26, 2023. However, pre-orders begin as soon as October 25. If you're certain you want to buy it, you may want to get on that, as it's possible the controller will suffer from supply constraints similar to that of its home console, the PlayStation 5.

The short trailer below goes over all the features the DualSense Edge will have, most of which are expected features seen in other recent 'pro controllers', notably the rival Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The DualSense Edge will have button mapping and customizable profiles, adjustable stick sensitivity, adjustable hair-trigger sensitivity, replaceable stick caps of different kinds, replaceable back buttons of different kinds, and a carrying case that simultaneously charges the controller.

One thing the DualSense Edge does have that the Xbox Elite does not is a lockable charging cable. What this means is that a switch on the end of the cable can be flipped to 'lock', preventing the cable from being disconnected, and thus allowing the player to move their controller freely while it charges, without having to worry about it unplugging. On the other hand, the Xbox Elite Series 2 does bring an extra D-pad and a separate charging dock, which the DualSense Edge does not.

Which accessories are more welcome is, of course, dependent on the person. What's undeniable, however, is that Xbox's 'pro controller' option is cheaper, currently priced at $154.99 USD on Microsoft's official site. It also offers a base version called Core, which leaves out all the adjustable buttons and sticks, but still provides a higher-quality controller that allows for button mapping and custom profiles; this is priced at $129.99. The price difference isn't surprising, as Xbox has been recently inclined to keep its prices as low as possible since it had the less successful console, significantly in terms of sales, during the prior generation; a clear example of this strategy is the Xbox Series S.

The DualSense Edge does offer another interesting and unique feature, though the accessories are sold separately, and that is replaceable stick modules. This is not a replacement of the stick cap, but of the entire module itself, seemingly in case of too much wear-and-tear. These modules will also be available on January 26, 2023, and will be priced at $19.99 USD each.
