Nintendo Will Compensate Fans For Switch Sports Downtime

Nintendo has confirmed via an official blog post that it will compensate Nintendo Switch Sports players for the game's recent removal of online functionality. The game has had its online play disabled since October 14 due to a bug that was found in its recent Ver1.2.1 update. As Nintendo itself Tweeted, the bug caused the application to close during pre-match loading screens, which was affecting both offline and online game modes. The servers have been taken offline since then, and it wasn't until today that players got an idea of when they would return.

As transcribed by VGC, the blog post stated that another update, Ver1.2.2, would be coming to Nintendo Switch Sports on October 18, and this would theoretically restore online play to its usual state. Save data backups, which had also been suspended, are slated to return on October 20 with another update, Ver1.2.3, although Nintendo made a point to say that this particular date wasn't set in stone.

A big caveat here is that Nintendo spoke with uncertainty about the first update's effectiveness. It wrote that some players may have to wait for the second update if they still can't play online after the first one.

When it comes to compensation, Nintendo will give all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers one extra week of membership time, so long as they'd previously played Switch Sports, even just once. Furthermore, from October 18 to November 3 players will receive twice the amount of in-game points online matches give out. The blog post also stated that the development team is working on a future plan to allow players to obtain the in-game weekly items they potentially missed out on because the game was offline.

Nintendo Switch Sports is a motion-controlled sports simulation game, which released back on April 29, 2022. It is the spiritual successor to the highly successful Wii Sports series and is built upon the same foundation of using motion controls to simulate the movements of sports games. The title includes returning sports such as tennis and bowling, as well as new additions such as volleyball and soccer. The latter is particularly unique as it requires players to strap a Joy-Con controller to their leg in order to simulate running and kicking a ball.
