God Of War Ragnarok Has Gone Gold

4.5
As confirmed by Santa Monica Studio, the highly anticipated God of War Ragnarok has gone gold! This means that the game's core development has been completed, and it's ready to be printed onto discs. With that knowledge in mind, it's safe to assume that the game won't be delayed and will hit its November release date. That being said, in the modern era of digital releases, going gold isn't really what it used to be.

The truth is developers usually keep working on their game almost up until the day of release, and all those adjustments either get added to the digital game or become day-1 patches for disc buyers. Cyberpunk 2077 famously announced it had gone gold then proceeded to delay the game three weeks beyond its previously established release date. However, PlayStation's first-party studios don't have a history of short-notice delays like that, so it's most likely there won't be any hiccups, and we'll all get to be trekking with our 'Boy!' on November 9th.

God of War Ragnarok is the sequel to the 2018 smash-hit reboot God of War and the 6th main installment of the series. It follows the story of Kratos and his son Atreus as they traverse through the lands of the Norse gods attempting to prevent Ragnarok. This will be the second title in the Norse mythology era, deviating from the original trilogy's Greek mythology setting, and as confirmed by Game Director Eric Williams, it's going to be the last.

Whether this means it will end the series for good, or Kratos will enter into a different mythology for the next game is unknown. Santa Monica Studio, a long-time PlayStation first-party team, has worked on the God of War franchise almost exclusively since the studio's inception.

Aside from its first title, a racing game from 2001 called Kinetica, every single one of Santa Monica Studio's games has been part of the God of War IP, starting with the 2005 original. It's undoubtedly possible that the team may be wanting to switch it up after this title. Cory Balrog, who previously directed the 2018 title, said back in 2021 that he isn't directing Ragnarok because the studio "is doing a bunch of stuff."

God of War Ragnarok will release on November 9, 2022, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
