EA's Iconic Battlefield Series Officially Turns 20 Years Old

4.3
EA's very first Battlefield game, Battlefield 1942, was first released in North America on September 10th, 2002, making the franchise 20 years old today.

Battlefield has gone on to become one of the most iconic first-person shooters of all time, spanning nine mainline titles over two decades. The first four entries in the series were only released for PC, prior to the launch of Battlefield 3 in 2011, which brought the hugely popular shooter to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"20 years ago, on September 10th, 2002, DICE and EA released Battlefield 1942, ushering in a new kind of first-person shooter – one that allowed you to partake in massive battles set in a WW2-themed sandbox that encouraged creativity and led to spectacles that we all know as Only-In-Battlefield moments", an announcement from the Battlefield team reads.

Since its inception 20 years ago, Battlefield has gone through multiple settings and wars. Battlefield 1942, the first entry in the franchise, was set during the Second World War, followed by the release of a sequel 2 years later, which took the series to the Vietnam War and was appropriately titled Battlefield Vietnam.

EA and DICE then went on to take the series across various settings, such as a modern-day war between the US and China in Battlefield 2, the first World War in Battlefield 1, and most recently the near future in Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield has often been regarded as the biggest competitor to Activision's Call of Duty series, which is arguably the biggest first-person shooter series of all time. Unfortunately, in more recent times, Battlefield has fallen flat in overtaking Activision's mammoth franchise.

The latest entry in the series, Battlefield 2042, was released last year to huge criticism from fans and reviewers. It became the lowest-rated instalment in the entire series and even became one of the worst-reviewed games on Steam when it was released to the public.

The developers recently stated that they are "all-in" on Battlefield, expressing that they are "committed to unlocking its potential as one of the best first-person shooter franchises in the world". Despite recent criticisms, the team remains optimistic, stating that "20 years is a huge accomplishment for any series, regardless of industry. We have the ability to shape what comes next. We have the leadership, passion and talent in place to build really amazing experiences for players in the years ahead".
