Activision has confirmed that the mobile version of Call of Duty Warzone has entered closed alpha testing.

In the first in a series of planned updates throughout the development process, the publisher said the upcoming mobile battle royale game is codenamed ‘Project Aurora’.

Activision is “in the midst” of the title’s first gameplay test, which is currently only accessible via direct invitation.

“Our mission with Project Aurora, the codename for our new mobile title, is to bring friends, families, and people around the world together in a global community of diverse players with a fast-paced, precise, and high-quality battle royale action experience that delivers a fresh new way to play,” Activision said.



It added: “The closed alpha is limited in size and with it we are looking to simply start to improve tuning, stress test matches, identify and fix bugs, as well as collect feedback and insights on all aspects of the game as new features come online.”

While Project Aurora is currently invite-only, Activision said it will be “opening things up and adding more players throughout the closed alpha phase and beyond”.

The publisher announced in March that it is working a mobile version of Call of Duty Warzone, the free-to-play game which was released in March 2020 and attracted 100 million players in 13 months.

Last August the company confirmed the formation of an internal mobile game development studio called Solid State, which was established to develop the new entry in the Call of Duty series.

It later confirmed that Beenox, Activision Shanghai and Digital Legends, which was acquired by Activision last year, had also been working on the new Call of Duty mobile game throughout 2021.

While Activision’s new blog said it’s not ready to share the game’s name or release date yet, it’s been claimed that Call of Duty Warzone mobile will be released in 2022.

Call of Duty Mobile has been downloaded over 650 million times since its October 2019 release, Activision Blizzard said in its latest annual report, which was published in April. The publisher claimed the free-to-play game had a record year in 2021, with consumer spending “well above” $1 billion.
