Rumor: Overwatch 2 Could Be Giving Doomfist Major Rework

The beginning of 2022 is shaping up to be an exciting time for many fans of the Overwatch franchise, as the long-awaited Overwatch 2 is about to host a multiplayer beta. Releasing at the end of April, players will have a chance to finally check out the anticipated sequel. However, the wait is already over for some, as a select group of pro players and Blizzard staff have received access to an alpha build of the game. While this early build was meant to remain private, some information regarding the game, specifically the character Doomfist, managed to find its way onto the internet.

First introduced to the original Overwatch in July 2017, Doomfist is a powerful DPS character. As his name suggests, many of his moves involve the use of a giant cybernetic arm. Using this powerful weapon, he can perform devasting melee attacks that send enemies flying across the map. In addition, he comes equipped with a hand cannon that fires a short-range spread of projectiles at enemies. While these powerful abilities make him a popular pick among many players, a new leak suggests that this character could be seeing a substantial rework in Overwatch 2.

Recently, a new screenshot was leaked for the upcoming Overwatch 2. The image showed what appeared to be the hero select screen for the sequel, as it featured teams composed of 5 characters instead of 6. Among the information revealed in this screenshot, perhaps the most noteworthy detail pertained to Doomfist. Specifically, his class appeared to have changed from DPS to Tank, as indicated by a shield icon next to the character portrait.

This news is likely exciting for many fans of Doomfist. However, it is worth noting that no other details were revealed about this potential rework. However, Lead Hero Designer Geoff Goodman has previously discussed the idea of changing Doomfist into a Tank character, making this new leak seem more plausible. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what alterations are planned for the character if this leak turns out to be correct.

While this potential rework regarding Doomfist is noteworthy, it is not the only information gleaned from this leaked image. In addition, players received a first look at what could be a redesign of Soldier 76, one of the original heroes featured in Overwatch. In the hero select screenshot, the portrait for the character showed him with a white beard and lacking a mask, giving him a new look.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Overwatch 2. Fortunately for fans, the beta is expected to release in only a couple of weeks, so much more about the game should be revealed soon.
