Valve Already Has Ideas For The Steam Deck 2

Valve already has ideas for the Steam Deck 2, despite the first Deck having only just released.

Pre-orders are soon to start being charged for Valve's Steam Deck, which means that the handheld PC will be making its way to customers' hands soon. Although that seems like the perfect time for Valve to relax a little and enjoy its own success, it's doing the exact opposite and already talking about plans for a successor.

As reported by PC Gamer, Valve recently talked to Edge Magazine about the release of the Steam Deck. While discussing it, Gabe Newell very casually confirmed that Valve already has ideas and plans for a successor to the Steam Deck, which Newell calls "Steam Deck 2".

When talking about how the most popular version of the Steam Deck was its most expensive, Gabe Newell said, "That's why we always love to get something out there and ship it. Because we learn a lot from that, and it helps frame our thinking for Deck 2. They're basically saying 'We would like an even more expensive version of this' in terms of horsepower capabilities or whatever."

Newell goes even further in discussing a second Steam Deck, outright saying that there will be "second iterations". Carrying on from talking about what customers want, he said, "The second iterations are going to be more about: What are the capabilities that mobile gives us, above and beyond what you would get in a traditional desktop or laptop?"

Interestingly, this isn't the first time that Valve has opened up about plans for a second Steam Deck. Back in August, shortly after the Steam Deck was revealed to the world, Valve designers Greg Coomer and Lawrence Yang admitted that Valve had already started looking to the future of the Steam Deck as they "believe this is a product line that will have a long life".

Even with that earlier confirmation, it's interesting to see Gabe outright confirm that plans are in the works and to see him call it the "Steam Deck 2".
