Battlefield 2042 Players Are Petitioning for Refunds

3.5
Battlefield 2042 had a ton of promise in its marketing material, but these innovations quickly soured among players as the game launched in a dismal state. It quickly fell off several charts as players left the game for various others, while the recent delay of Battlefield 2042’s seasonal content didn’t help at all. This reception easily puts Battlefield 2042 as one of the most disappointing games of 2021, and now fans are seeking refunds.

For context, Battlefield 2042 players seem to be seeking complete refunds much akin to the Cyberpunk 2077 launch. Battlefield 2042 may continue to improve much like the latter, but for many, the initial luster is gone, it’s not what was promised, and its lead-up is considered false advertising, leading to a petition to Sony, Microsoft, Steam, DICE, and the Federal Trade Commission to allow refunds on all platforms.

Alleged by this Change.org petition (and reported by Windows Central) is that Battlefield 2042 has cost consumers millions of dollars and upset hundreds of thousands. The petition references several happenings since its launch, such as statements that it's unplayable, drastic Battlefield 2042 bugs that impact the in-game experience to this day, refunds made available on Steam, and more. It further states that “signing this petition is the equivalent of saying ‘I wish I got a refund on this game.’”

The creator of the petition, Satoshi Nakamoto, also states that if the petition received 50,000 signatures, then one of the best class-action lawyers will take the case against EA. However, the lawyer is not named and there’s no evidence provided for the claim. Nonetheless, five days ago, this petition sat at 700 signers (and has been live for at least three weeks, if not longer). As of this writing, the petition has over 11,000 signatures.

Nakamoto ends this petition with a simple statement: “The gaming community should not tolerate this kind of abuse and bullying from multi-billion dollar corporations who make unfinished games and false advertisements. “ It should be noted that these types of refunds do not typically meet much success, as the case of Cyberpunk 2077’s refunds was a surprising, almost industry-changing moment, and so it remains to be seen if EA or Dice ever acknowledge this petition.

Despite this fact, its quick growth does show how invested many are in the Battlefield franchise, as a beloved FPS and a long-time competitor to Call of Duty, and how many feel let down by the release. Hopefully, Battlefield 2042 can turn things around, but given recent developments, it’s not really shaping up to be one of the industry’s “redemption” games.

Battlefield 2042 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
