Infinity Ward confirmed for 2022 Call of Duty and Warzone experiences

Activision has confirmed that Infinity Ward will lead the development of 2022’s Call of Duty premium and “Warzone experiences”.

The announcement was made as part of Activision Blizzard‘s fourth quarter 2021 financial results on Thursday.

“The team is working on the most ambitious plan in franchise history, with industry-leading innovation and a broadly appealing franchise setting,” the company said.

“Studio expansion has continued to add development resources worldwide as plans continue for ongoing live operations and new, unannounced titles in the Call of Duty universe.”

Following this, Infinity Ward posted a tweet stating that “a new generation of Call of Duty is coming soon”.

Activision has also confirmed that premium Call of Duty: Vanguard sales declined year-over-year compared to 2020’s Black Ops Cold War, and overall engagement was down in Call of Duty: Warzone.

Meanwhile, Call of Duty Mobile grew year-over-year in the fourth quarter, driven by contribution from China, with consumer spending exceeding $1 billion during 2021.

We previously reported that a new Warzone map and several classic Modern Warfare 2 maps are in development for 2022’s game.

As first reported by VGC, Modern Warfare 2’s campaign will be centred around the drug war against Columbian cartels.

Sources said the single-player story is “a grittier take on Modern Warfare 2019’s campaign”, with more close-quarters combat, tricky decision making, and the classic Call of Duty set-piece moments fans have come to expect.

According to people with knowledge of the developer’s plans, Modern Warfare 2 will release alongside a brand new map for Warzone: the third such all-new arena to be launched for the battle royale spin-off.

As with Verdansk, which is based on Modern Warfare 2019, the new MW2 Warzone map will be comprised of various classic points of interest, we understand.

Activision’s latest Call of Duty title, Vanguard, reported 36% fewer sales than its predecessor Black Ops Cold War in the UK last year.

Although the decline will likely be disappointing to publisher Activision, Vanguard was still the second best-selling game in the UK last year, according to GSD, behind EA’s FIFA 22.

In the US, NPD data showed that Vanguard was also the second best-selling game of the year as of its November release month, but it did not manage to outsell its predecessor Black Ops Cold War as of that period.
