Uncharted PS5 Performance Video Compares It to PS4 Version

3.4
It is fair to say Naughty Dog gave players some of the most visually impressive games of the last console generation with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and The Last of Us Part 2. The former two are getting a new lease on life thanks to the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection coming to PlayStation 5 alongside several visual improvements to both titles. These improvements, along with any other performance differences, are given a spotlight thanks to one YouTuber who highlights the differences from PS4 to PS5.

As mentioned, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collections features both PS4 releases in the popular action-adventure PlayStation-exclusive series. Players are able to revisit the globe-trotting, single-player adventures of Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer with the power of PlayStation 5 behind them. However, like 2015's Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, this collection does not feature any of the multiplayer options available in the original releases.

The performance differences from PS4 to PS5 were the focus of YouTuber Digital Foundry's newest video analyzing these in detail. He begins by highlighting the new fidelity, performance, and performance plus modes providing 30 FPS, 60 FPS, and 120 FPS, depending on whether players want to prioritize visuals or responsive gameplay. From there, the video breaks down the subtle visual improvements to both titles and changes made to audio output.

One of the standout points from Digital Foundry's breakdown includes the increased draw distance in both Uncharted titles, even when running on the performance mode. The video points out the Legacy of Thieves Collection's performance mode is similar to Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy when running on PS4 Pro, except for the 60FPS available on PS5.

Digital Foundry's only notable criticism of the visuals comes during certain sequences in performance plus where there is a slight drop in frames. However, given the game is already running at 120FPS native in performance plus, the drop in frames is harder to notice or feel in gameplay.

The visual differences highlighted in the video are just another example of how developers, especially Sony's first-party devs, have given several PS4 titles a second-wind on PS5. Aside from Uncharted, Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima have received similar treatment on PS5 to coincide with re-releases on the newer platform. Other titles, like God of War, were simply made backward compatible and received an update shortly after.

It also bodes well for whatever Naughty Dog's next title ends up being. As the studio has shown since the first Uncharted, it's able to get the most out of the hardware under the PS3 and PS4's respective hood, and it is fair to say this is likely to continue on PS5.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collections is available on January 28, 2022 on PlayStation 5.
