Black Ops 2: New engine isn't necessary - Treyarch

4.3
Treyarch's studio head Mark Lamia has dismissed criticisms that Call of Duty needs a new engine to power graphical improvements.

Despite this year's Black Ops 2 running on the same engine engine as 2005's Modern Warfare, Lamia says extensive improvements made to that 'foundation' have resulted in significant advances without the need for an entirely new engine.
"People always ask me, 'Is this a new engine?' I liken it to people who live in an older house that has been remodeled. Just because you're remodeling the house and it will look new or it will have a new kitchen, you don't tear out the foundation, or break out some of the framing," said Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change. The creators alter them; they don't modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game," he went on.

"We asked ourselves that very same question - we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system.

"The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second - but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine," said Lamia.

Activision has said it's "incredibly pleased" with the record pre-order numbers it's seeing for this year's Call of Duty.

Severance Black Ops looked very cartoonish graphically wise, and from the reveal trailer it looks like blops 2 will follow suit. Seriously, Infinity Ward's call of duty games have always looked better than Treyarch games.
Maybe if you didn't play BO on your 480p 15" TV then the graphics wouldn't look "cartoonish". BO had very beautiful graphics and so will BO 2. MW2 and MW3 have awful graphics if you ask me.

black ops has very cartoonish graphics they are not "beautiful" at all, I play on a 32in 1080p vizio TV and MW2 and MW3 both have good graphics
You obviously aren't using the correct settings on your TV. Things like sharpness, brightness, color, etc. I have the settings just right and the game looks amazing. MW3 just didn't look great sorry if it upsets you but it's true.
graphics don't make a game good or awesome, kids these days

No, a new Engine is essential.

COD in general is getting old. It needs a complete overall with new engine. Treyarch sucks at making COD games. Any success they've had was because of IW. WAW was successful because everyone was loving COD4 and taking it back to WW2 was refreshing and it was basically COD4 with a WW2 feel. Black Ops was successful because of the inovative MW2 and everyone was looking for it to be just as impressive but wasn't. Black Ops 2 is being talked about so much and is successful so far because IW dropped the ball MW3 and everyone is hoping Treyarch will do better but trust me they won't.

For all those inept people, Engine does not necessarily mean 'Better' Graphics.

His input is just as valuable, but so so wrong. MW2 + MW3 visuals are what I would call "good." Black ops was cartoonish (in a Borderlands kind of way.)

As 2005's Modern Warfare lol? CoD4 came out in '07.

And like hell they don't need a new engine. It's boring now.
