Black Ops 2: New engine isn't necessary - Treyarch

4.3
Treyarch's studio head Mark Lamia has dismissed criticisms that Call of Duty needs a new engine to power graphical improvements.

Despite this year's Black Ops 2 running on the same engine engine as 2005's Modern Warfare, Lamia says extensive improvements made to that 'foundation' have resulted in significant advances without the need for an entirely new engine.
"People always ask me, 'Is this a new engine?' I liken it to people who live in an older house that has been remodeled. Just because you're remodeling the house and it will look new or it will have a new kitchen, you don't tear out the foundation, or break out some of the framing," said Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change. The creators alter them; they don't modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game," he went on.

"We asked ourselves that very same question - we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system.

"The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second - but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine," said Lamia.

Activision has said it's "incredibly pleased" with the record pre-order numbers it's seeing for this year's Call of Duty.

I just love how everyone is like "NEED a new engine".

No they don't, every COD they have used the engine for, they have upgraded and tweaked the engine.
The only reason some of you say this is because you feel the graphics need to be updated, well guess what? COD is not played for the graphics now is it? Is it Battlefield 3? No. If you want a game to look good, go play Battlefield.. COD is all about the man-on-man fast paced gameplay. Graphics do not make the game play much better.. It just makes your simple mind think "OhEmGee Dat iz wel priteh"

Glad they're using the IW engine, from the looks of it, it seems as they've remodeled the game entirely. Looks nice, but MW3 ran off of the IW engine, so I'm a bit worried about that.

I feel that Cod4 and WAW was hands down the best games of the call of duty franchise. but also mw2 was a good game as well...it was graphically the best cod i feel. but after Black ops and MW3. I lost so much interest in the franchise. it just doesnt make since how it goes from great to worst. it suppose to be the opposite. black ops and mw3 are such crappy games. Hopefully Black ops 2 will be some fun and originial concepts back to call of duty. Looking forward to see what treyarch comes up. kuz honestly if this game is crappy like the last 2....i will def not be buying any more future Cods.

Black ops 2 "NEEDS" a new engine, any Cod after mw3 needs one, or else where buying the same damn game with some DLC. Or at least you guys are.

And WAW and Cod4 were the best cod's go back to that.

KnucklesTheEchidna seeing as WAW has better graphics than BO and BO2, and how WAW is more fun then BO's and probably BO2, WAW is probably going to be the only good COD made by them

this guy knows whats up

To be honest, I agree. Graphics don't always mean a better game. Look at Minecraft, Borderlands, LBP. I mean they are important but they don't need a new engine. Believe it or not, the IW engines is one of the best out there. Judge me.

I swear if Black Ops 2 looks anything like MW3 then I am waiting for the next-gen call of duty.
