Xbox cutting the price of Game Pass and Live Gold in three territories

Microsoft is cutting the price of its Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold subscription services in three territories.

The platform holder will reduce the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Games for console, Xbox Game Pass for PC, and Xbox Live Gold in Chile, Hong Kong, and Israel.

GameSpot, which has published a breakdown of the current and new pricing plans, reports that the cost of the services won’t be reduced in the US or the UK.

“Microsoft regularly evaluates the price of Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold at a local level to best serve customers in each country,” a company spokesperson said. “These price adjustments were informed and based on local market conditions in each country.”

Microsoft hinted at the potential introduction of cheaper Game Pass prices during a presentation in June.

“We need to innovate to bring our games and services to more people around the world. And we’re investigating how to introduce new subscription offerings for Xbox Game Pass,” Xbox’s experiences and platforms boss Liz Hamren said at the time.

“The point is that we’re being creative and dynamic in thinking about how to deliver the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet across devices, geographies, and financial realities.”

Xbox Game Pass launched in June 2017 and has become central to Microsoft’s gaming business, attracting over 18 million subscribers as of January 2021.

According to VentureBeat sources, the service now has approximately 20 million subscribers, but is far from profitable.

During Microsoft’s fourth quarter earnings call in July, CEO Satya Nadella claimed Xbox Games Pass is “growing rapidly”, with subscribers playing approximately 40 percent more games and spending 50 percent more than non-members.

It was announced today that Marvel’s Avengers will join Xbox Game Pass on September 30. October’s Xbox Game with Gold titles were also revealed.
