Xbox 720 pre-owned games block 'would be fantastic,' says dev

4.5
The next Xbox's rumoured move to block used games would be "a fantastic change for our business," says Volition designer Jameson Durall.

Writing via the AltDevBlog, the Red Faction: Armageddon man claims the general public don't appreciate how much pre-owned game sales are hurting developers, and welcomes rumours that the Xbox 720 could introduce a platform-wide online pass system - throttling the pre-owned market.

"There's another big rumor about the next Xbox console that could really start to shake things up... it won't play used games at all," Durall writes.

"Personally I think this would be a fantastic change for our business and even though the consumers would be up in arms about it at first... they will grow to understand why and that it won't kill them."
He adds: "The system is already there for Microsoft, all they'd have to do is use the DLC and codes model they have to tie a game to your Xbox live account.

"Each retail disc would likely need that unique key somewhere in the code so the account would be able to link it properly. Ideally it would tie a full version to the console it is registered on so family members can play even if the main account isn't signed in, but this is exactly how their model works now anyway."

The designer admits the proposed system would have faults, but goes on to suggest issues such as game rental and lending games to friends could be ironed out by Microsoft.

"I could see Microsoft implementing their own rental service which would maybe give them a code that activates the game for X days and they are charged a small amount," he says.

"This could work when you borrow the disc from someone or even with digital download of the full version. It would also send a percentage of the rental to the Developer with each rental... likely improving the overall revenue we would receive from it."

So many faults.

So registered to ONE xbox console.
Lets say you have 40 games.
Your xbox breaks and you have to get
a new one? So your going to spend
over $500 on all the games again.
If i let someone borrow it they have
to pay to play it.
No thanks i will stick with my 360
even if you turn off the xbox live.

To be fair, blocking pre-owned games would do more harm to the dev's than people buying pre-owned games, as the majority of people whom play the games and have other, more important payments to make would quite simply stop buying the games altogether.
I'm a 16 year old, living in my own flat on minimum wage on a part time job, as I attend college full time, and quite frankly without pre-owned games i wouldn't be able to afford three quarters of the games I have, since bills leave me with pocket money basically, and it takes me 2 to 3 weeks to save up for a 20 pound game, never mind paying 40 every time I want a game. I would ask my parents for money if i lived anywhere near them, they live in blackpool and i'm up in dundee, so asking them for money means taking a train there and back, which is even more money spent.

I dont think im the only one who is in a situation like this, so others must know how it feels.

david_155 I dont think this is going to happen for 3 reasons

1: What about if the person doesn't have online mode to track the code.

2. Some people rent games and those company's that rent them would go out of buissness and that wouldn't be good for neither the company or the maker of the game because the maker gets a cut of the profit.

3.Personaly i think if the Xbox720 added this their profit would go down and the PS4 would grab this change to make a better system that let used games to be played. And some other things the Xbox720 wont offer. And the Xbox would have such low profits that they would have to make it that it uses used games.

Only problem is PS talked about doing this with the PS3, but received a lot of criticism so they didn't. So to assume that PS would benefit from this is silly, b/c they've already considered doing the same thing.

DC Universe is a prime example. You have to enter a code that links it to your system. It cant be sold or played on another.

Well i'd like to see what he does, once he hears that PS4 are doing the exact same thing, but then if they ain't and people leave xbox in their hundreds of thousands, that would be reason enough for MS to kill it regardless of what the devs think, if they want to ban preowned games, it's up to them to put the online pass on their games.

flop Fantastic for rich people. The only way I GET games is from trading in my games I don't play anymore (Which I couldn't do anymore,) and get used games (Which I couldn't do anymore,) because I don't have money for new games. And I know this would hurt them because of people like me.

Paying $60 for a game doesn't make you rich -.-. But I guess to the 13 year olds on TTG, you must be rich to pay $60 for a game.

He's not saying he's rich, why dont you learn how
to read...

Why don't you go take a class about reading comprehension. He basically said this preowned game block is fantastic for rich people, and that he has to trade in games to get games.

So I told him paying $60 for a game doesn't make a person rich, and that you don't need to be rich to afford a $60 game.
yh but not every 1 can afford 60 dollars silly ****, listen, 60 dollars might not seem loads to you but to other people thats a lot of money, now read what he said you big headed individual, get your head and remove it from you arse, much love

$60 is a lot to me, that's why when I was a kid I got something called a J-O-B. Only time my parents ever bought me a game was for Christmas, or my birthday.

Get off TTG and fill out some job applications.
