Anonymous vows internet blackout if Stop Online Piracy Act is passed

4.6
Hacktivist group Anonymous has promised to strike back with an internet blackout if the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is approved. A vote on the legislation was delayed this week and is not likely to be held until the new year. However, Anonymous suggested that this delay is a smokescreen, and that the law "further proves the reality of corporate rule and totalitarianism".

"SOPA tramples civil rights laws, fair use, freedom of press and freedom of speech. Under SOPA an average person could be arrested, fined, sued and spend time in a federal prison for as little as uploading a video to YouTube or even linking to one," Anonymous said in a statement.

The group has vowed to strike back in a big way if the legislation becomes law, and has called on its members to deface web sites with protest messages in a bid to get the anti-Act message to as many people as possible.

"Let's replace the face of the internet with a clear message about how we feel about censorship. Replace the front page of every web site we can with a simple, clear protest page," Anonymous said.

"Encourage friends, businesses, organisations, social media to take a stand alongside us in the same way. Get this image and message everywhere online. Plant the seeds of dissent wherever they can grow."

The hackers said that supporters should also deface billboards and advertisements with similar messages.

"Get people talking. Put the truth not only where it can be seen, but where it cannot be avoided. This is something everyone can do. We are legion, this is our voice, people are listening, we will be heard," the statement said.

Oasis Hey Anonymous, take a freaking chill pill would ya? No one is ever going to get arrested for linking to a video for christ sake.
your wrong , if this becomes a law , you could in fact be arrested or fined up to 5,000 dollars for uploading anything that could be considered "piracy" . which includes uploading any clip from a video game , movie , music , or tv show with out the creators consent.

But isn't that bascilly illegal already? Shouldn't you need the creators consent?... If your getting all scared about not being able to see you cod montages then you need to calm down. Activison would most likely let everyone or make you pay a fee every year to do so.

IMO nothing is wrong with the bill. Anonymous stfu, we don't we little 20 year old nerds running the world.

Good to see someone else has sense.

And to whoever quoted the Illuminati a few comments back...seriously? you still believe your country is secretly being led by a underworld society of leaders? HAHAHAHA.

You are exactly the kind of person Annon are looking for, young, impressionable and gullible.

Have fun being paranoid your whole life.

Here's a statement; the best thing that came of Annon was Lulsec, now they're gone it's just plain embarrassing.

I live in the UK so I don't have to worry about the retarded Americans who proposed that bill.
I'm not wrong, your just another one of those people that buy into everything they read, get your own mind, stop trying to follow something you clearly don't understand.

What Annon is doing is wrong and they know it, despite what laws get put in place you have to remember the people that agree on those laws were put there by the people that voted for them. Don't like it? Vote for someone else but then don't moan when it doesn't always go your way.

Annon uses scare tactics the same way a government scares you into not breaking the law.
u must not have heard of the illuminati it dosen't matter who we vote for here they put whoever the **** they want in there they just use voteing as a distraction to make us think its our fault i mean come on censor the internet we work our ass off to pay for ? i support annon 100% on this one i did not support the whole sony thing but this time its clear there on our side

This is why I love anonymous in a few ways. They stand up for the people, not themselves.

My question is why does the government think they have the right to do this? and what are they thinking, people will start to riot once this is passed!

warinvader I'm sure people will say that taking out the whole internet would be impossible.

It's not.. look up a root name server. Then realize there are 13 in the whole world and they support our internet. Taking out only one would do nothing as the others can take the load. Manage to take out several, however and eventually the rest of them will automatically fail.

If this happens, the internet would still be online... but nobody would be able to access anything as all the websites and computers virtually lose their IPv4 or IPv6 adresses.

BTW, about that comment. That is a very simple presentation as most root servers are spread over many servers around the world. But considering they work together, taking out "one" would mean they all go offline :)
