Destiny 2 Players Find Traces of an Upcoming Enemy Race In-Game

4.2
Destiny 2 is an ever-growing universe as Bungie introduces new ideas to the game each year and fills the time in-between with seasonal pursuits. The Forsaken expansion notably saw the addition of the Scorn, a new enemy race, and this year Beyond Light added the first of the Darkness subclasses. Destiny is getting more and more confident with exploring the concept of Darkness as time goes on, and some players think that there are remnants of the theorized Darkness race in the game already.

This upcoming race, now called "the Veil" by many fans, has been talked about for many years, but only recently gained traction. Over year 3, Destiny 2 started to heavily feature the Darkness, the Traveler's antithesis, in its story. With Darkness subclasses now a reality, fans think there's a greater chance to see a brand new race, fully allied with the pyramid ships that invaded the Solar System a couple of months prior.

Interestingly, user BruhRaz found the evidence for this Darkness faction inside the Ascendant Plane of the Dreaming City, a piece of content from 2 years ago. By glitching out of bounds, they found their way into a secluded area, and stumbled upon a dormant "miasma" standing on top of a chunk of rock. This part of the Ascendant Realm isn't meant to be visited by players, and could be a leftover content. Regardless, it contains a distinct object that fits the description of Darkness manifestations, and doesn't look like anything else found in-game.

For starters, Cayde-6 described in his journal a volatile, swirling mass of tendrils from his encounter with the Darkness. This fits the curious entity found in the Ascendant Plane pretty well. The Drifter, a character relatively well acquainted with the Dark, also notes confronting a viscous and formless creature that suppressed his Light during his travels beyond the Solar System. Plus, a similar animated miasmic effect was seen during Season of Arrivals when the pyramid ships directly interacted with the players' artifacts on Io.

While these depictions all share common visuals, the hope is that this will eventually lead to a new enemy type that players can fight in-game. Bungie had plans for another enemy group before Destiny had launched, simply named "race 5," and represented with a single piece of concept art. That characterization still goes hand in hand with what players have found in-game. However, it is up to debate whether race 5 is still in the works or has ultimately become the Taken.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
