GameStop reportedly accepting all Cyberpunk 2077 returns

Cyberpunk 2077 has been labelled as “defective” before being sent back to GameStop warehouses.

US retailer GameStop is telling staff to accept all returns of the recently-released Cyberpunk 2077.

That’s according to Kotaku and Vice Games’ Patrick Klepek, which both report that the company issued an internal memo to all employees saying that they are to take the game back even if it has been opened. Furthermore, GameStop has been told to label the returns as “defective” before returning them to the warehouse.

Normally, the retailer only takes back games if they haven’t been opened, but GameStop is clearly prepared to make an exception in this rather strange case. Customers do apparently still need to return Cyberpunk 2077 within 30 days of them buying it, though.

This comes in the wake of Cyberpunk 2077’s botched release. The game launched on December 10, but within four days developer CD Projekt Red asked for patience over the title’s poor quality on PS4 and Xbox One, saying that customers could refund the game. The studio also said that some major patches were on the way to fix problems. Speaking to investors, CD Projekt admitted that it didn’t spend enough time on making the older versions of the game perform well.

Since then, Sony has pulled the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store and is offering full refunds, while Microsoft is giving customers their money back. Following Cyberpunk 2077’s removal from PlayStation Store, CD Projekt’s stock dropped by 15%.

Meanwhile, staff at the Polish developer are reportedly furious at how they have been treated, having been long-overworked to launch the game, and have been asking management how CD Projekt’s reputation is going to recover from this release.
